Sharon Deming Obituary

INDIAN LAND, S.C. - Sharon Kay (McMullen) Deming, 78, of Indian Land, S.C., passed into eternal life in Austin, TX on June 7, 2025.
Born on Oct. 12, 1946 to Grace (Neumann) McMullen and Lawrence McMullen in Geneseo, IL, Sharon met her husband of 48 years Donald F. Deming Jr. while earning her B.A. in Elementary Education (1968) and singing in The Augsburg Choir at Augsburg College. A lifelong learner, Sharon returned to college in her sixties to earn a graduate certificate in Academically and Intellectually Gifted Education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (2013).
Sharon enjoyed diverse professional and creative pursuits throughout her life. She was a teacher in Minnesota and North Carolina and a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant. She was a talented seamstress who created everything from slipcovers and draperies to wedding gowns and costumes for figure skating, Halloween and theatre for her children and grandchildren. Music was a lifelong passion for Sharon. She sang in church and community choruses throughout her life and directed the Sun City Carolina Lakes Choral Society in her final years (2023-2025).
Sharon was predeceased by son Donnie and husband Don, and is survived by daughters Susan Boush, Rebecca (Bernie) Rumpf, and Janice (Brendan) Whelan; grandchildren Alex and Timmy Boush, Lars and Anders Rumpf, and James and Sarah Whelan; and sister Susan (Merle) Thorson.
Private services for immediate family will be held at The Old Tennent Cemetery in Manalapan, N.J. on July 9, 2025.
Memorial donations may be made to the Charlotte, NC nonprofit Arts+ (artsplus.org) to support their mission of transforming children's lives through accessible visual arts and music education.

I met Sharon when she started attending Faith Presbyterian Church in Indian Land. She so enjoyed singing in our church choir, it was a passion in her heart to share. She will truly be missed by me, her friend, and many others. She was a joy to know.

My sister Sharon has been and always will be an inspiration to me. With a song in her heart she met each day as an opportunity. She took on the challenges of life by leaning on her faith and family and brought joy to this world in everything she did.
I will miss her terribly but it is well with my soul because I know she is with the Lord and those that went before her.

A beautiful caring person who left us to early. I am so sorry she did not get to enjoy her new home which she was looking forward to.
All of us in the choral society will miss her very much. If she had not volunteered to take over when our other director passed the choral society would have probably have had to disband. We were very fortunate that she did take over and we had great shows under her leadership.
My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

A wonderful person who left us much to early. I am sorry she did not get much time to enjoy her new home which was looking forward to.
We both shared our journey of this terrible illness always asking how we were feeling. Sharon was a very caring person and showed that to all of us in the choral society in Sun City. We all will miss her very much.
My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

I am sorry she did not get much time to enjoy her new home. Sharon and I shared some our cancer journey always asking each other how we were feeling. Sharon was a beautiful person. Her smile was infectious! It pained me to see how she struggled through our last concert, but she kept smiling! I feel blessed to have known her. My sincere condolences to her whole family.

Sharon never complained. She pushed on directing us with incredible energy and poise bringing our chorus to their best in every performance. It was both sad and a joy to see her smile with joy as she garnered enough energy to direct us once again in her final days! Her fortitude and strength was an example for us all. Sharon will be remembered and missed.
