BOB HOUMARD Obituary

BOB 'HOSS'
HOUMARD, 74

WINTER HAVEN - Bob 'Hoss' Houmard, 74, crossed the final goal line surrounded by his family on March 29, 2021. He was born on February 1, 1947 in Wooster, OH to Milo and Gloria Houmard. Hoss was a Physical Education Teacher with Polk County Schools for over 25 years until he retired in 2006. Jewett School of the arts Athletic field is named in his honor. This is where Houmard started his teaching career in Polk Country.
Houmard was an all-American both in high school and in college where he attended Ohio University class of 1969. He was drafted by the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers in 1969. During training/tryout camp, Houmard was approached to play professionally in Canada for the Canadian Football League (CFL). He accepted and played with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Edmonton Eskimos. Houmard's professional career ended abruptly after a tractor accident on his farm in Smithville Ohio in 1974.
In his free time Hoss enjoyed fishing with friends, spending quality time with his grandchildren, making woodworking projects for Country Primitives and lots of family gatherings. He served as an officer and was an active member of the Winter Haven Lunker Lovers fishing club for several years.
Hoss is preceded in death by his wife of fifty years Vicki and son-in-law Chad Harrison. He is survived by his brother Ron (Barb) Houmard; children Nikki Harrison (Scott Stewart), Ty Houmard (Melissa Ethington), and Ryan (Lori) Houmard; seven grandchildren, Doug Harrison, Tori Harrison, Kylee Stewart, Haileigh Houmard, Stephen Houmard, Isabelle Houmard, Wyatt Houmard; and one great-grandchild Bristol Harrison.

Coach Houmard was a real difference maker and will be truly missed. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

I was a student at Vincent Massey Collegiate (VMC) in Winnipeg from 1969 to 1972. Coach Houmard was the Phys. Ed. teacher during the off-season when he played football with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

He was a great teacher and brought an energetic, fun and intense competitive level to all school team sports and even to intra-mural athletics.

I have a great memory of him as a track coach at VMC. He pushed me far beyond my self- imposed mental and physical limitations in the 220 yd. race. During his intense training sessions he would say "I know you hate me now, but this is what you have to do to win."

Because of him and his coaching, I ran the best race of my life at the Cloverleaf finals in Winnipeg in 1970 and won first place. At the end of the race, he ran over, high-fived me and said " I bet you love me now."
