Maintenance Technician
LAKELAND - Johnnie Browning, Jr., 84, died September 20th at LRMC, due to cardiac arrest.
He worked for GTE, now Verizon Telephone, from 1948 until retirement in 1986 as a Building Maintenance Technician. He was a faithful member of New Bethel AME Church, serving as President for the Adult Men's Choir for many years, member since 1948, 40 years as a Trustee, Chairman of Finance Committee, and Trustee Emeritus in 2011. He was a member of the Imperial Optimist Club of Lakeland, 32nd Degree Mason, Past Worshipful Master - St James #18 AF & AM, and Past Deputy Grand Master.
He is survived by his loving family, wife, Valda H. Browning; five sons, William Browning of Lakeland, Tony (Patricia) of Freehold, NJ, Johnnie III of San Francisco, CA, Michael, and Alan Browning of Lakeland; 7 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, brother & sisters -in-law, nieces, nephews, & other family members.
Visitation will be held Friday, 5-7 pm at New Bethel AME Church (2122 MLK, Lakeland). Funeral Services will be Saturday, 11 am at the Church.

I am sorry to learn of the passing of my former neighbor, Mr. Johnnie Browning. I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories amd we find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love.

Mrs. Valda, my heart broke when I learned that Mr. Johnnie has passed on to be with Lord. He was one of the greatest friends to my mom & dad, and especially me. Although I will always treasure his sense of humor, I will never forget how much loved you and his boys. Asides from my dad, no other man has had as great an influence on me than Mr. Johnnie. I am truly a better man, husband and father for having had Mr. Johnnie as a mentor and friend. May GOD bless and keep you and the family during this time of great sorrow!!

I will always treasure the genuine friendship that Mr. Johnnie showed towards my mom and dad. I can't recall many Sundays that we didn't see each other at church, or at least during the week. I will miss his sense of humor and the way he displayed the greatest love of all towards Mrs. Valda and his sons. He was a man of great class and dignity, impeccable style; yet a humble servant of God. I am a better man, husband and father for having known Mr. Johnnie.
