Sergio Vallejo Obituary

DR. SERGIO H. VALLEJO

LAKELAND - Dr. Sergio H. Vallejo passed away peacefully at home on Monday, January 29th. He was born on August 9, 1933 in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, the son of Carlos M. Vallejo and Carmen R. Ibarra. He went to Havana to fulfill his life passion of becoming a physician. He attended the University of Havana Medical School and graduated on December 1960. Shortly after, he married his wife Mirtha and they started their journey together that eventually brought them to Lakeland with their children Mirtha and Sergio.
Dr. Vallejo's strong feelings against the communist system in Cuba, and fearing for his life led him to escape to the United States in 1968, leaving his family behind knowing that it was the only way to get them out of the country. After a long year of separation and uncertainty, they reunited in Winfield, Kansas where Dr. Vallejo worked as staff physician at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center.
Their next step brought them to Lakeland for Dr. Vallejo to attend the Internship Program at Polk General Hospital in Bartow. He entered private practice in 1972 as a Family Physician, first at the General Practice Clinic and afterwards on his own. He was a staff physician at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He dedicated most of his practice to the area Nursing Homes as an attending physician and Medical Director of several of the homes, since 1974 until his retirement in 2014. His life was dedicated to his patients and the institutions he worked for.
He was Board Certified and Life Member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Board Certified and member of the Florida Medical Directors Association and the American Medical Directors Association among other professional associations. He was also member of the Board of the Lakeland Yacht and Country Club.
Dr. Vallejo was loved and admired by everyone who knew him. His warm personality, his compassion and his genuine friendliness made him special. He loved his family, his friends and enjoyed listening to classical music and old Cuban songs, traveling the country and the world and watching his favorite television programs, mainly sports.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years Mirtha, daughter Mirtha Crosby and husband Scott, son Dr. Sergio R Vallejo and wife Kim, grandchildren Anthony and Christina Vallejo, and Allyson and Brandon Pickering, as well as a brother, a sister and several nieces.
A special recognition to his caregivers from Helping Hand Nursing Services, Good Shepherd Hospice and specially Caridad Hernandez, for her devoted loving care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The First Tee of Lakeland, YMCA Par 3, 1740 George Jenkins Blvd, Lakeland, Fl. 33815 or Special Olympics Florida-Polk County, 2215 Sleepy Hill Rd. Lakeland, 33810.

Serg, Jackie & I were most sorry to hear about your Dad. He was one doctor and friend since he first came to Lakeland. We had many laughs with him and your Mom. Please convey to her our sympathies. One of our favorite pieces of art in our house is a framed prescription he gave Jackie for Two weeks on Lago di Como, with plenty of wine. We are sure your family will miss him.

I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Vallejo was a great doctor and he was my mothers doctor for many years. She always thought highly of him and so did I. I remember my mother used to pick on him all the time when she would go see him about self diagnosing herself. He would always say i am the doctor and you are the patient I will tell you what is wrong. My mom loved that.

I was saddened when I saw this in the paper! What a kind, gentle, great Doctor he was! I worked for him for a time and even had he and his wife to our home for dinner in the early 70's! The last time I saw him was for Dr. Bob Eissman's memorial service! I will be praying for strength and peace for all of you. He will be GREATLY missed by so many!

Mirta and Family:

So sorry to hear about Dr Vallejo. He is going to be missed by many as he was loved and respected by many.
Thru the years in our old Cuban parties as well as working at the Hospital and Nursing Homes, Dr Vallejo was a pleasure to work with and a great person, with thhe best sense of humor.
The nurses used to kid that we did not need to page Dr Vallejo we could hear his voice and laughter down the halls.
His patients adored him,he saved many and impacted the lives of many.
I know if Alex would be alive he would be very sad as he appreciated Dr Vallejo very much.
I am down with the flu and would not be attendin, but if you need anything anything at all, call me at 6192984.
With my sincere condolence and love

We started as patients of Dr. Vallejo when he was at the General Practice Clinic in June of 1972 until his retirement. He was absolutely the best doctor we could have been assigned to.......we were never just patients to him, never just a number in his daily routine. He was more like family to us. We loved him and will miss him so much. Thank you to his family for sharing him with us. He WILL be missed.

Lo siento mucho por su gran perdida. Podemos encontrar consuelo en las palabras de Jesus en Juan 11:25. El nos promete algo maravilloso ahi y nos da la esperanza de poder ver otra vez a nuestros seres queridos.
