Jane T. Morton, 98, passed away peacefully at Granville Health System on Thursday, August 21, 2025. Mrs. Morton was known affectionately to many as simply "Aunt Jane".
Jane was born in 1927 at home in the Berea community of Granville County, Oxford, NC to Henry Norman Thorp Sr. and Martha Eugenia Thorp. She was the widow of George Daniel Morton, Sr. and an expert homemaker.
Jane was a graduate of Berea High School, and she is believed to be the last surviving member of the Class of 1944 at Berea. She attended Peace College (now William Peace University), Greensboro College and Appalachian State University. She was also an early student at Vance Technical Institute after it opened in 1969. In the 1970's and 1980's, she enjoyed taking cake decorating, ceramics, chair caning, antique trunk refinishing and sewing among other courses at VGCC.
Jane was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church early on and later moved her membership to Oak Hill Presbyterian Church upon her marriage. She was actively involved in the Church, serving as treasurer for many years as well as on the Pulpit Committee at various times when hiring a new minister. She enjoyed taking exercise classes at the Granville County Senior Center from age 84 until her health declined. She then exercised daily using her walker. She was also a former member of the Granville County Genealogical Society along with her niece Martha.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and four sisters: Belle Thorp Hoffmann, Charlotte Thorp Hensley, Lucy Thorp Morton and Mary Thorp. Her stepson, George D. Morton, Jr. and nephew George D. (Dan) Morton, III also preceded her in death.
Jane is survived by her niece Martha Morton of Oxford, nephew Tom Morton of Oxford, brother Henry N. Thorp, Jr. of Oxford, stepson Edgar Morton of Raleigh, great niece Blair Morton Trexler (Stephen)of Stem, great great niece Cora Jane Trexler, great nephew Ross Morton (Julia) of Oxford, great great nephew Hesston Daniel Morton, and great nephew Clark Morton (Heather) of Oxford. She is also survived by step grandchildren: Eddie Morton (Hope) of Raleigh, Cornelia Morton Poer (Bryan) of Durham, and Jason Morton (Janet) of Raleigh. Five step great grandchildren and seven step great great grandchildren survive her as well as other nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
The Morton family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the entire Oxford Health and Rehab staff for their very compassionate care of Jane as well as special helpers which include Alan Watson, Joyce Moore, Herb Morton, Mary Ellen Stovall, Virginia Elliott (Jen), Raymond Currin and Fleming Hayes. The family is also grateful to Dr. Nicolas True and the Granville Health System Emergency Room staff for their exceptional care of Jane in her final hours.

charity of your choice: Oak Hill Presbyterian Church, Granville County Senior Center and Will's Way Project (a charity which provides gift bags and care packages for families and caregivers of pediatric patients at nearby hospitals).
