David Stroud Obituary

McAllen - David Monroe Stroud, 75, of McAllen, Texas, died on March 7, 2025 as a consequence of a brain injury he sustained from a fall while out on one of his many daily walks. David was born and raised in McAllen, the youngest child of Doris and Audie Stroud. He was a 1968 graduate of McAllen High School and worked at the family business, Stroud's Home Furnishings.

At the age of 14, David's family discovered that he was a Type 1 diabetic, a condition that was difficult to control when technology was not what it is today. He responded to this disease by committing himself to a lifetime of healthy eating and exercise, though he also enjoyed indulging in his favorite unhealthy foods on occasion. In recent years, he was proud of how well he was managing his blood sugar, something he attributed to his prolific walking. He would sometimes text one of his kids with a report on how far he walked; one day last year he logged 12 miles!

David's pride and joy were his three daughters: Lisa Stroud Hyche (San Antonio), Laura Stroud O'Dea (Kyle), and Angela Stroud (Ashland, Wisconsin). He raised the two younger ones as a single father when they were in high school, a time he looked back on as "the best years of his life." Dad was a great listener and was genuinely curious about what his kids thought about the world, or about a movie they would see together, or what was happening in their lives. He was also the best person to watch sports with and his laughter would boom throughout the house whenever The Simpsons or Seinfeld were on. His favorite activity of all was to sit back and watch his three girls being together.

David is survived by his three children and their families-including eight grandchildren-and his steadfast companions, rescue dogs Ralph and Queenie. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, Linda, Paul, and Tim. He was survived by his brother Joe.

David was a kind and generous man who lived a humble life. He taught his kids that justice and love are the highest ethics, and that laughter is the best medicine. Whenever life was challenging, he offered simple, yet reassuring advice: do the next right thing and take it one day at a time. That's what we've done since your accident, Dad, and it's what we'll continue to do until we see you again.

A service of remembrance will be held on May 26, 2025 at Kreidler Funeral Home in McAllen at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to Palm Valley Animal Society, pvastx.org or (956) 720-4563.

My condolences to David's family. While working at Strouds Furniture thru the 80s, I had the pleasure of meeting and working with his parents and his siblings...the Strouds family was very involved in their family business. To this I appreciate how David and his family treated all employees and customers with utmost respect. Forever RIP, David you were a good man.

My condolences to David's family. May he rest in peace. My dad and Mr. Audie Stroud were business partners at one time, and I knew David and his siblings as a young child while I was a young person. They are a fine family.

David was quiet but energetic and a smart businessman. He had Audie´s business acumen and Doris´s calmness and humility. With a lot of humor and savvy, David carried on the Stroud tradition of taking care of his family and friends. God bless his daughters and family, Rest in peace.
