Terence "Joe" McPhillips

Norfolk - Terence Joseph "Joe" McPhillips died on July 20, 2017. He was born in Norfolk on February 8, 1924. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Sarah Finn McPhillips, sisters, Kathleen Falls, Sarah Baker, Mollie Reilly, Genevieve Caulfield, his brother, J.Vincent McPhillips, and his granddaughter, Sarah Benson. Joe was a graduate of Holy Trinity High School and Georgetown University. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a combat medic in the 90th Infantry Division in Europe, and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal Combat Medical Badge, European Campaign Medal with two Bronze Service stars. Joe retired as owner/operator of Bazemore's Market. He was a long-time member of the Ryan Club of Norfolk, Sertoma Club of Norfolk, and the Nocturnal Adoration Society. Joe served on the Boards of St. Mary's Cemetery and the Norfolk Community Trust. He was a volunteer tax preparer for the AARP at the Senior Center for many years.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Julia Bray McPhillips, children, Terry McPhillips (Peggy), Frances M. Benson, Lucy M. Oliver, Sally McPhillips, John McPhillips, Pauline McPhillips, Frank McPhillips (Carole), Julie M. (Collin) Hill, Elizabeth M. (Eric) Gruber and grandchildren Charlotte, Morrigan (Shawn) and stepson, Braedon, Whitney, Keenan, Britt (Chris), Genavieve, and Kathleen, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church at 6400 Newport Ave., Norfolk on Monday, July 24, 2017 at 11:00 am by the Reverend Father W. Daniel Beeman. The family will receive friends at the church; one hour prior to the Mass. Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's Home for Disabled Children or to a charity of the donor's choice. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk chapel is handling arrangements.
