MERCEDES - Emma Barton Trevino, 98, born in Brownsville, TX, passed away Sept. 29, 2011 at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco. She was the daughter of Abilio and Maria Barton Trevino, early settlers of Mercedes. She was the youngest of eight siblings. Preceding her in death were Susanita (Eduardo) Longoria, Ester (Roberto) Marroquin, Santitos (Roberto C.) Champion, of Progreso, Arturo B. (Elida) Trevino of San Antonio and Abilio Trevino, Jr. Also preceding her in death were nieces Diana Marroquin, Anita Trevino Sanger of Clear Lake and Danny Longoria. Survivors include nieces: Dora Champion (Raul) Gonzalez of Austin, Gloria Champion (Homero) Garcia of Weslaco, Stella Marroquin Oakes of Chamblee, GA, Sarah Trevino (Doug) Anderson of Denver, CO, Livia Anne Trevino (Don) Pequignot, of Los Angeles, CA. Also surviving are nephews: Eduardo and Jimmy Longoria, Robert G. (Mariaelena) Champion, Ernesto (Elba) Champion, Richard T. (Olga) Marroquin, David (Norma) Marroquin all of McAllen and Ron (Jeannie) Trevino of San Antonio. Emma attended Mercedes schools and graduated from Holtry's Beauty College in Harlingen. She owned and operated the Hiway Beauty Salon on Second St. in Mercedes. She was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church and also of the "Hijas de Maria", sang in the choir and was very active with the church's festivals. Emma played a big part with all of her nephews and nieces as she was instrumental helping to prepare them for life through her example of Love of God and neighbor and to become honest, law-abiding adults. She enjoyed life and loved having family gatherings at her home especially during Christmas. Emma took care of her parents, brother Abilio and nephew Danny. She would also be at the "beck and call" when needed by her siblings. Visitation will take place Monday, October 3. 2011 from 10 am till 9 pm with a rosary to be prayed at 7 pm at the funeral home chapel. Funeral Mass will be said Tuesday at 10 am at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church with burial following at the Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be some of her nephews. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes. Our deepest gratitude to the staff at Weslaco Nursing and Rehab, to our second cousin, Norma Guerra and most especially to Eddie and Jimmy who lovingly, faithfully and unselfishly took care of Emma.
