Jerry Berg Obituary

McAllen, Texas - Jerry Lee Boycan Berg, 69, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, surrounded by family and friends.

Jerry Lee was born on March 11, 1956, in Harlingen, Texas, to Andrew Gerald and Mary Jane (Searcy) Boycan. She graduated from Harlingen High School in 1974 and went on to attend Texas Christian University, where she earned a degree in Fine Arts in 1978.

Jerry Lee dedicated 40 years of her career to KRGV Channel 5 in Weslaco, Texas, where she became a valued and beloved member of the community. Often referred to as the voice of Channel 5, she spearheaded community initiatives including Teach the Children, Masterminds, GEAR UP and Easterseals. In more recent years, she continued her commitment to service through her work with the Rio Grande Valley Diabetes Association, as well as volunteering for the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show.

But perhaps Jerry Lee was most at home where there was music. A lifelong lover of dancing and musical theater, she shared her gift with others as an instructor for many years at McMillan School of Dance and Palm Valley Gymnastics & Dance. She was known for her warmth, humor and the meaningful relationships she built throughout her life. While she wore many hats - teacher, volunteer, leader - her favorite title was "Mom." Her children, Evan and Elyssa, were the center of her world and her greatest pride.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth Ray Berg; and her brother, John Bankston. She is survived by her children, Evan and Elyssa Berg; her brother, Dean Bankston; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

A celebration of Jerry Lee's life will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home in San Benito, with Pastor Steven Parker officiating. In keeping with Jerry Lee's joyful spirit, guests are encouraged to wear colorful attire in celebration of her life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1532, Harlingen, Texas 78551 or RGVDA, 3200 N. 23rd, Suite A, McAllen, TX 78501.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home, 1400 W. Business 77, San Benito, Texas 78586. www.sanbenitofuneralhome.com 956.361.9192

Jerry was not only my friend at work, but also my confidant and constant source of strength. Whenever work felt overwhelming, she was the one who talked me off the ledge with wisdom, kindness, and humor. She was deeply loved and respected, and her absence will be felt by everyone who knew her. Above all, she was incredibly proud of her daughter and son, and she spoke of them often. She will be missed more than words can express.
