Jo Hanshaw Obituary
With profound sadness we announce the passing of Jo Belle "Nonnie" Hanshaw, our loving and devoted mother, grandmother and friend to all whose lives she touched. Josephine Belle Hanshaw was born November 4, 1928 to Alma and TH Waugh in Houston, Texas. While attending the University of Houston, she met and married her partner for life, Jack Hanshaw, whose father had pioneered the valley with Hanshaw's Dime Store. Jo Belle and Jack raised four children in Harlingen, Texas before relocating to McAllen, Texas to open Gibson's Store in 1968. Jo Belle was active in her chapter of Jayceettes and for many years in several bowling leagues in Harlingen and McAllen. She had a passion for painting landscapes, making Christmas stockings for her entire family, making Christmas ornaments and her famous sugar cookies. She loved the beach and spent as much time as possible at their simple but beloved Beach House on the island in the 60's and 70s. Jack and Jo Belle had four children from which the mantra Jack, Jo, Jacki Jo, Jay, Jerrie, Jim was recited countless times evoking family past and present.
She is preceded in passing by a brother, Tony, and sister, Helen. She is survived by her four children, Jacki, Jay (Becky), Jerrie (Jack), Jim (Lolly); nine grandchildren, Bryan, Nicholas, Ashley, Jaymee, Lyra, Trey, Taylor, Jimmy II, Alyssa and twelve great grandchildren, Nevaeh, Bellamy, Kalani, Kole, Avery, Lauren, James, Sasha, Gaya, Caden, Conor and Sue.
When remembering Jo Belle, there are many memorable quotes to reflect on, but must outstanding would be her reply when asked, 'How do you do?" She would smile and always say, "as I please." She loved her family and her Lord and went to meet her marker on January 26, 2022, surrounded by her family and friends, at her home in McAllen. She adored her friends and her nurse Alex.
Services will be at Kreidler Funeral Home in McAllen, Texas on February 12, 2022 at 10:30 am.
