On August 20th, 2021, the McAllen Police Department lost a man who devoted himself to safe guarding those within the City of McAllen while also improving the working benefits for all sworn police personnel. Sgt. Arenas was one of the primary individuals who brought about Civil Service, Collective Bargaining, Improved Pay, Step Pay Levels and Improved Sick & Vacation leave. Those who currently or have served should never forget the ones who brought about these positive changes.
Joe started his McAllen Police duties while assigned to my patrol shift. Joe always performed his police duties properly for the safety and well being of everyone within the city. It was my pleasure to work with him and to see him advance to the rank of Sergeant. I firmly believe that Joe could have advanced further. Yet, he was comfortable and fully enjoyed serving as a Sergeant of Patrol.
Joe and I spoke a couple of weeks ago. It was not an easy conversation because we both knew what the future held. And we commented about his condition and what lay ahead. Then like most, we just talked about our times spent at the PD and in the union. I know, from our conversation, that Joe was at peace.
My deepest condolences go to the entire Arenas family. Maybe you will find some comfort and peace in knowing that Sgt. Jose Arenas left the McAllen Police Department and the City of McAllen in a better condition that when he began his career. He served with great honor, courage, integrity, loyalty and respect.
May the Lord welcome Joe while also providing comfort and guidance to you, his family.
With Great Respect to the Sergeant Jose Luis Arenas family,
Dwayne Miller - Lieutenant ( Retired ) McAllen PD

My condolences and prayers to Sergeant Jose Luis Arenas' family. I want to thank you Sergeant Arenas for being a mentor and especially for being my friend while serving along side you at the McAllen Police Department. You were a great leader and served your community well. I remember when I was finishing up my last phase of my training. You and Sergeant Honeycutt were waiting for me at the old McAllen police department municipal court room. You looked at me with a straight face, and told me well ppo Garcia I don't think you passed your last evaluation. I was thinking what the heck. Than you Sergeant Arenas than smiled and began to laugh. You than told me congratulations officer Garcia and handed me my police patches. Back than in them days we had to earn our patches. You told me welcome to McAllen P.D. Your sense of humor is just one of many good traits you had. It was an honor to have served with you Sergeant Arenas. Thank you for being my friend. I am proud to call you my brother in blue. Great memories Sergeant. Until we meet again. Rest in peace brother. We will miss you Sergeant. God has truly gained another angel. Your friend officer Jose Luis Garcia #4647.
