Lonnie Smith, a proud member of the 1962 Class of Texas Aggies, was born and raised in Weslaco, Texas with his older brother, James, and younger sister, Mary Belle. As a youngster, Lonnie spent time with his father and grandfather in their workshops, instilling a love for woodworking and learning tools of the trade. Lonnie learned a great deal about mechanics and working on machinery of all types from his father, Chester, who was a diesel mechanic for Holt Caterpillar. Lonnie´s mother, Ruby, was a fantastic homemaker, who also enjoyed arts and crafts, sewing, and was a Sunday school teacher and active in women´s ministries at her church. In addition to woodworking, Lonnie enjoyed spending time with his father, uncles and cousins deer hunting and enjoying the outdoors.
After high school graduation, Lonnie´s college education began in the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. At this time, Texas A&M was the Agricultural & Mechanical College of Texas and a military based mens only college. Lonnie made several dear friends while at college and still keeps in touch with his old room mate that lives in New Braunfels. Upon graduating Texas A&M with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Lonnie served in the United States Army and was deployed to Germany, where his first daughter was born.
After his time in the Army, Lonnie returned home to Weslaco, and was employed by Valley Readymix concrete & supply. He then later moved to Mission, where he became the manager of Hidalgo County Irrigation District. Lonnie later moved on to Central Power and Light and was an integral part of the Good Cents energy program. Lonnie even ventured into construction, remodeling and building new homes.
Upon retiring, Lonnie moved to the hill country looking for a slower paced life. Over the years, Lonnie has enjoyed spending time with his 5 children and 8 grandchildren, passing down his love for the outdoors, woodworking and arts and crafts.
Memorial donations may be made to Texas A&M Foundation for Aggie Scholarships, or to any organization honoring Veterans.
