MARIO CANTU Obituary

MARIO ALEJO CANTU, JR. SAN JUAN – Mario Alejo Cantu Jr., 44, died Sunday, January 18, 2015. You have been enlightened by Christ. Walk always as children of the light and keep the flame of faith alive in your hearts. When the Lord comes, may you go out to meet him with all the saints in the heavenly kingdom. (Catholic Baptismal Rite) Mario was the epitome of a father, a husband, a brother, a son, a friend, and most of all a Christian and a true gentleman. Few men impact the world around them as Mario did with his unwavering and devout love for Jesus Christ. He took advantage of God's gifts and grace by enjoying hunting and fishing with his dad and cousins, he exercised fervently, he sang Karaoke, he loved traveling, he was a great cook and loved to barbecue but most of all he loved his wife, Melissa and his daughter, Zienna. Mario was instrumental in bringing ACTS to the Rio Grande Valley. He was a true and beautiful example of an ACTS brother, not only going through the retreat but then living it and quietly but passionately inviting others to do the same. ACTS has grown with the many family and friends that answered Mario's call and will readily continue to share his light. Born in McAllen, he had lived in San Juan all of his life and was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in San Juan. Mario graduated from UTPA with a Master's degree in rehab counseling. Mario is survived by his wife, Melissa Tan Cantu; a daughter, Zienna Leigh Cantu; his parents, Mario Alejo Cantu Sr. and Olivia S. Cantu, all of San Juan; his sister, Michelle (Andres) Gonzalez, of Eagle Pass; a nephew, Patrick David; a niece, Rebecca Sophia; his mother-in-law, Eva Tan, of McAllen; and two brothers-in-law and their families, Eric Tan and Michael Tan, of Austin. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary today, January 21, 2015, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral mass will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 22, 2015, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in San Juan. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr. Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Sign the guest book at www.themonitor.com/obituaries

My condolences to the Cantu Family. July 23,1995 was a great year when Border Patrol Academy Classmates 290 met one another, became friends, trained and graduated in December 1995 (19 1/2 years ago). We all went to different sectors and the years went by quickly. The last time I saw Mario was on Highway 77 north of Raymondville, Texas where we were working an operation out there and we bumped into each other in early 2000. Mario will always be a friend and will be missed. God Bless

I'm so sorry for your loss. Mario was a true person who cared for people. I know this because I worked with him at a non-profit agency. He helped many people with disabilities find employment in the community and I know they are grateful to him for that. He was a hard worker, dedicated, God fearing, great listener, and friend. He always made sure we were all ok at the office and checked up on us when he knew we were stressed about something. I will always be thankful to him for helping me as well in growing in my career. He will truly be missed. May God comfort you all during this difficult time. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Mario and I met while we were working on our Masters. We were both in our 40s and so we somehow related and became instant friends. We had all our classes together, worked on projects together, studied for exams together. He always had very interesting questions in class; Mario was so bright and intelligent. We called each other “brother” and pushed each other to do better. Mario chose a counseling career because he wanted so badly to give back to others, to lift them up, and give them hope. I loved making him laugh and he would always poke fun at me for being on facebook during class. We talked of working on our PhD program; we were just waiting for that right moment. My last communication with him was in December. He was helping me deal with a suicidal client. I could always count on his wisdom and strength. It hurts so much to say goodbye. My deepest condolences to all his family and friends.
