MISS BUSHMAN Obituary

MISS LOEEN BUSHMAN
MISSION - Miss Loeen Bushman passed away March 15, 2010 at the Bridges at Mission after a long, twenty year battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born July 23, 1931 in Weatherford, Oklahoma along with her twin sister, Ms. Lois Kelly. Loeen and Lois grew up on So. Shary and attended Sharyland School for eleven years. Loeen was valedictorian of her senior class in 1948. She was an accomplished musician and accompanied many choirs and at thirteen she was organist of First Baptist church in Mission. She graduated from Baylor University in 1952 with a B.A. degree, majoring in organ and has served as organist in many churches in Texas. She was also accompanist for soloists and choirs appearing on "The Baptist Hour", for which she also was producer. Loeen was a member of the American guild of Organists and was selected as one of the "Outstanding Young Women in America" in 1966.
Loeen was the accompanist for Miss Joe Ann Shelton, a talented gospel singer, for many years and together they traveled all over the world giving concerts in churches and teaching. Together Loeen and Joe Ann were in charge of all the music for the Southern Baptist Radio and Television Commission in Ft. Worth, TX.
Miss Bushman was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Helen Bushman, her brother, Wesley Eugene Bushman, and niece, Linda Kelly. She is survived by her twin, Mrs. Walter Kelly (Lois); sister-in-law, Mrs. Margie Bushman of Dallas; and nieces and nephews, Mrs. Becky Kelly Riney of Hermitage, TN, Tom Kelly of Ft. A very special thank you goes to both Bridges caregivers for their daily dedication and commitment to her care and also for IPH Hospice Health Care for their professional help and tending to Loeen's needs.
Loeen Bushman's beautiful and very generous smile and musical talent will be missed.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 1600 Harvey, McAllen, TX or the Alzheimer's Assn, 222 E. Van Buren, Suite 303, Harlingen, Texas 78557.

To the family of Loeen Bushman:

Loeen was a very dear friend of mine who I met through the music ministry of Travis Avenue Baptist Church.

You will already know what I am about to mention but I think it is helpful to have these facts confirmed by her many friends. Loeen was one of the most gifted, natural church organists and pianists I have ever known or heard. She was modest and rarely would acknowledge her extraordinary abilities. It is my thinking that she was a remarkable accompanist, seeminly knowing what the performer was going to do even before the performer knew. Her musical sensitivies reminds me of the quote from Wayne Gretsky when asked about his success as a hockey player, " I skate to where the puck is going to be." She always played where she knew the performer was going to be.

What a tremendous loss to church music, to her friends and fans and her family.

Loeen, thanks for the wonderful memories! Love from your friend, Carol Smith
