Terrence Posluszny Obituary

McAllen - The family of Dr. Terrence L. Posluszny, "Dr. Terry," sadly announces his passing on May 14, 2024, at McAllen Medical Center after a brief illness.

Terry was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 18, 1951, to Lawrence and Lydia Posluszny. As a young person, he was an avid ice hockey player and loved music, playing guitar in several rock bands. As a teenager, Terry attended Mount Saint Joseph Catholic High School for boys on a full scholarship after obtaining the highest score out of over 2000 applicants on the placement exam. At age fifteen, Terry lost his father to undiagnosed heart disease. This became a central driving force behind Terry's decision to become a cardiologist and underscored his lifelong passion for the treatment, compassionate care, and diagnosis of cardiac patients.

Terry attended the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, where he developed another lifelong passion: Notre Dame football! After graduating cum laude with a Physics degree, he attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine. It was there that he met the love of his life, Sharon, and his lifelong friends, her brothers Dr. Charles R. Graham (University of Maryland School of Medicine '77) and Dr. Richard Graham (Johns Hopkins School of Medicine '75).

Terry continued his medical training with a cardiology fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Baltimore Veterans Hospital. After his training, Terry and his family moved to sunny South Texas where it was his distinct honor and pleasure to care for cardiology patients in the Rio Grande Valley for over 42 years. The absolute center of his life was family, friends, faith in God, and the ability to diagnose and treat his heart patients. Nothing brought Terry more joy than alleviating a patient's suffering and improving their quality of life with his diagnostic skill. As he often remarked, Terry loved "when the science worked" to improve a person's outcome, and he worked tirelessly to help each patient.

Terry was a member of the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association, the Hidalgo Starr County Medical Societies, the American College of Cardiology, the American Society of Echocardiology, the American Heart Association, and the Texas Medical Foundation. Over the course of his decades long career, Terry received many awards and honors, but was most grateful to be able to provide services to his many, many patients. He is forever indebted to his amazing staff of Yesenia, Sylvia, Mark, Luis, Adriana and Miguel.

Aside from physician, Terry's favorite role in life was father, husband, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; his two beloved daughters, Dr. Lauren Bourell D.D.S. M.D. (husband, Christopher Bourell J.D. L.L.M) and Susan Posluszny J.D. (partner, Lauren Fash); four grandchildren, Marilyn Elaine, Sabrina Marie, Quincy Faith and Jonah Bourell; two beloved brothers-in-law, Dr. Charles R. Graham (wife Dr. Soon Ja Kim) and Dr. Richard S. Graham; and of course, his many lifelong friends.

Terry's family would like to thank the medical, nursing, respiratory, and pharmacy staff of McAllen Medical Center. There are too many to name, and all of you were amazingly kind. We would like to acknowledge Dr. Michael Jelenik, Dr. Adolfo Kaplan, Dr. Jesus Rodriguez, Dr. Roman Erik Tavarez, Dr. Joshua Betancourt, Dr. Tommy Yee, Dr. Lester Dyke, Dr. Julian Gomez, Dr. Vincent Vann, Kimberly Prescott Pharm.D, Joyce Zeldis, Dayana Bermea, and everyone who touched Terry's life with their compassionate care. And of course, Dr. Terry's family is certain he would want to thank each and every one of his patients whom he regarded with so much care and love over these many years. Dr. Terry would have loved to be your cardiologist forever.

Visitation will be Friday, May 17, 2024 from 6-8 pm with a rosary at 7. Funeral mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 18 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church with burial to follow at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

I w
Too wish Dr. Posluszny could have been my cardiologist for assistance long as I live. He saved my life, after y had been told by another cardiologist it was probably (menopause). He received me without an appointment or financial means to cover his consultation, and he did so for over a year. Him and his staff was with me until well past midnight, for I needed a medication ASAP according to his findings of serious heart/lung complications.
In 48 hrs. I had the medication.
Even when his health was not at its best, he wanted to make sure the needs of his patients were being adequately cared for.
I owe my life to God, to the dedication and love of Dr. Terry Posluszny for his fellow human bings. Thank you Mrs. Posluszny for your kind understanding towards his calling.

Dr. Posluszny was an awesome and caring cardiologist. We first heard about Dr. Posluszny when mom was first sent to a cardiologist to get exams. At the time, mom did not have insurance nor way of making payment (close to $1,000). Dr Terry took her on knowing she would to be able to pay. He just wanted mom to get treated for her enlarged heart. Later when mom got insurance, she made sure to continue seeing with Dr. Posluszny. He kept her heart working strong . We will miss his generous heart, and compassionate way of treating mom. We are confident he was greeted with open arms in heaven. Restveasy Dr Terry. You will be missed.

Dr. Terry served my whole family and my in-laws. We laughed that our families would be one of his annuities. He was an innovator, switching me from a medication giving side effects ( discovered when I had to suspend one med in order to take the COVID anti-viral ) to a new variation of a cutting-edge injectable. I know he and his staff worked hard to get patients access to the new med, which has to be administered in another clinic. He always drilled me on where to go for emergency treatment, and that one of those was a med-tech called " Vampire " for its clot-sucking abilities. He was always on top of it ! Tremendous, caring professional. Better living in this world because of him.

I am so so sorry Mrs. Posluszny & Daughters on lossing your husband & father. He was my cardiologist and I am going to miss him forever. He performed open heart surgery of my mom Ruth back in the 80`s. He was not only my cardiologist, but a friend & we talked about family. He was very proud of his daughters ( one being an attorney & the other a plastic surgeon) I hope one of his grandchildren will follow his footsteps & becomes a cardiologist like him. I lost a daughter last year in May 2023 & Dr. Poslluszny grieved with me. I love you Sir. My husband will miss you, too. He was his cardiologist. May the Lord Jesus Christ give you peace, comfort & love. Our prayers are with you. Anthony & Juanita (Janie) Flores, Edinburg, Tx.

I was so saddened last night learning of my favorite Dr's passing. I was called last Tuesday to cancel my Thursday (9th) appointment because Dr. Terry P. was out of the office. Even though it was just a routine 6 month check to make sure everything was progressing positively. I wish I could have seen him one more time. He always had a plan! I told him, he always fixes my heart! He was a genius! I always knew I was in the best of care. My dad died of a heart attack way back in 1978. Dr. Terry came into the valley in 1982ish and saw the need for a Valley wide heart association, which he initiated. Dr. Don Warden, who my dad's best friend and Dr. when he died, was Dr. T's strongest supporter, he told me. I and my heart will forever be grateful to Dr. Terry P. I will greatly miss you.

Dr. Posluszny was an excellent doctor and a kind and compassionate man. I knew I was in good hands every time I visited him, and I admired his encyclopedic knowledge of medicine and many other things. I express my condolences to his family and staff and mourn his passing with you. I had hoped to be his patient for many years to come.

May 17, 2024

Dr. Posluszny was a real human being taking time out of his busy schedule to explain a heart rhythm that is not taught in Paramedic schools because it is hardly ever seen, but never treated people that he was above them, but preferred to spread his knowledge which we should see more of from people. Great person and can´t say enough about him.

My sister just let me know about the passing of Dr. Terrence Posluszny before I became a teacher I worked for years at MMC monitoring people's EKG monitors and I impressed many people with my ability to interpret an electrocardiograph, it was all because of him. He was a great teacher and always took his time to visit me and chat about cardiology, our families, and Star Trek. He gave me his cell # in case I ever had any questions or needed to get ahold of him for one of his patients. I still have that number memorized.
Sadly I had to use it myself for my mom, I was informed that she was in the ER and had coded. The first Dr. I spoke to thought it may have been a heart attack and I immediately grabbed the nearby phone and called him, within minutes he was in my mom's room and took the lead, personally dragging an echocardiogram machine into the room. He then called every Dr. he thought could help to come quickly. They worked heroically to save her but in the end, it was her time to go, I will never forget his kindness on that day. I will be forever in his debt. Rest in Peace, thanks for everything,
