Clyde Galen Benson, age 83, of Alma, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2012 at Masonic Pathways in Alma.
He was born on March 12, 1929, in Wakefield, Michigan, the son of Oscar and Anna (Hansen) Benson. He married Alice M. Ensign on December 22,1956 in Ypsilanti. Mr. Benson graduated from Wakefield High School, received a B.A. in Education from Michigan State University, and a Masters degree from Central Michigan University. He received an honorable discharge from the United States Army were he served as a Lieutenant.
He taught Jr. High Industrial Arts in Alma from 1956 to 1967, and then became the media director for the Gratiot/Isabella Intermediate School District until his retirement in 1991. Mr. Benson was a founder and charter member of the Gratiot County Teachers Credit Union, now GRACO Federal Credit Union in Alma. He was an avid gardener and stamp collector.
He is survived by his wife, Alice; son, Tim (Joan) Benson of St. Louis; grandson, Tyler (Kristy) Benson; great-granddaughters Olivia, Annie, and Charlotte; grandson Joshua (Bronwyn) Benson; son, Stuart (Susan) Benson of Howard City; son, Andy (Kathy) Benson of Alma; granddaughter, Heidi Benson; great-grandchildren, Chelsea and Brandon Wise; granddaughter, Jill (Matt) Moreno; great-granddaughter Mia, granddaughter, Melissa (Lionel) Awasung; and daughter, Mary (John) May of Stanwood, grandson John Clyde; two sisters, Patricia Wolfe of Coarsegold, CA, Glenda-Jo McBride of Lincoln, CA.
His parents, two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
Memorial Services will be held Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Doig Chapel, Masonic Pathways, with Pastor George Ayoub officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of service Wednesday, at the Doig Chapel. Memorials may be made to Hemophilia Foundation of Michigan, please visit

To Aunt Alice and all our cousins and their families, Uncle Clyde was a sweetheart to us when we were just little kids. He came home while stationed in Germany by the U.S. Army and showed us slides of their heavy artillery as well as parts of that beautiful country. We thought he must be a General. He joked and told corny jokes we kids adored and repeated for years. Best of all, he took me for my first airplane ride in a 4-seater in Ironwood, MI, and became my hero for life. I'm sure you will miss him. You're in our prayers.

I am sorry to learn of the passing of Mr. Benson. He was my shop teacher in the 8th grade. He was a very patient teacher. I enjoyed his class and learned some skills that I still use. May he rest in peace.
