James Studebaker Obituary

Jim Studebaker was born the second of four sons in Alma. The son of a science teacher and park ranger, Jim had an inherent sense of curiosity and love of the outdoors. An outstanding athlete and outdoorsman, he was twice awarded the Presidential Physical Fitness Award, and no fish in Pine River was safe when Jim had his line in the water. 1983, was a life-changing year for Jim. In a few short months he lost his father, joined the Navy and met the love of his life, Pamela Kay Davis. Jim met Pam on the LY Spear in Virginia where he was a Machinery Repairman Second Class. They married in 1985. Jim's time in the Navy prepared him well for his career, both as a machinist and a mechanical engineer. He worked for Delta Design for 21 years. Jim was a family man and a very proud papa to Kara and Lauren. He loved to hand-make things for them, everything from a Beauty and the Beast swing to a money-grabbing machine and other games for their Grad Nites at Westview HS. He was a devoted husband and celebrated his 25th anniversary with Pam last July; the same month that he gave away his eldest daughter Kara in marriage. Jim will be missed by so many: his neighbors for whom he was Mr. Fixit and the ultimate block-party organizer; his co-workers at Delta Design (from San Diego to the Philippines); his many friends with whom he camped, fished, golfed, and played pool and volleyball; his second family, the Davises, and his beloved Studebakers. He will forever be remembered as a Loving Son, Brother, Husband, Father, #1 Son-in-Law, Brother-in-Law, Uncle and Friend. Jim will be met on the other side by his father Leonard. He is survived by his mother Bette Le Blanc (Ken), his loving wife Pam, daughters Kara Vause (Thomas) and Lauren Studebaker, brothers Thomas (Kelli), Jon (Carolyn) and Joel Studebaker and numerous family members. A military service will be held Friday, June 3rd at 8:45 am at Miramar National Cemetery followed by a Celebration of Jim's Life at Lake Poway. Bette, I am so sorry for you and your family's loss, I too was a student in the 8th grade at Walling school. I remember you as the brightest teacher we had ever seen. So motivated, kind and loving, you took us on a picnic with your Husband and he too was wonderful to all of us.

I am very sorry to here of Jim's passing. Jim was a great friend growing up and I have many memories of playing pickup basketball together and shooting hoops at his house. With my deepest sympathy, Jeff Watson Alma High School class of 1981

Bette,
My heart goes out to you and your family at this difficult time.
You may not remember me but you were my 7th and 8th grade teacher at Walling school in Shepherd. You were one of my favorites. I remember going to your apartment at CMU and your husband had painted baby feet on one of the interior doors using the side of his hand and his finger tips for toes.
May God give you the strength to you through this very sad time.

So sorry to see this today. Mom and Dad were up this past weekend for my youngest's graduation and they mentioned they had heard this. Jim was a great person to grow up with - as all the Studebaker boys were very special to me and my family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the whole family.
