Jeanne Cook Obituary

Jeanne B. Cook (neé Lange), age 74, passed away with her family by her side at her home in Mt. Pleasant on Saturday, July 8, 2023, after a brief illness. Being able to see and speak to her family gave tremendous comfort to Jeanne, and she maintained her sense of humor, silliness, and radiant smile despite her circumstances. Jeanne was born in Wyandotte, Michigan on December 19, 1948, and was the seventh of eight children. She attended Saints Andrew and Benedict Elementary School, and Holy Redeemer High School, which were in Detroit. Jeanne earned a B.S. in Recreation from Michigan State University (MSU), where she met Jonas Cook, and they were married at the MSU chapel on November 1, 1975. She worked in and outside the home and retired as a Title I paraprofessional (reading and math) and paraprofessional in Special Education. Jeanne was drawn to creative pursuits including sewing, quilting, photography, stenciling, cross-stitch, and basket-weaving. She was very detail-oriented and humble about her projects, often joking about how long it took her to finish them, and had a child-like joy when one was completed. She loved doing crosswords by Fred Piscop (because they were "just difficult enough") and playing Sudoku. Jeanne also enjoyed driving the pontoon and kayaking at the family cottage on Long Lake in Ionia County and kayaking in the Chippewa River on annual trips with friends. Jeanne will be dearly missed and remembered by her friends and family for her intelligence, sense of humor, modesty, generosity, compassion, excellent cooking, and active listening. She is survived by her children, Jessica (Charles) Hughes of Sacramento, California, and Justin Cook of Mt. Pleasant; cherished grandson, Henry Hughes; sisters Claudia (James) Carrier, Leslie Lange, Roberta (John) Marek, and Georgianna (John) Hughes; brothers Walter (Tomoko) Lange, John (Vivian) Lange, and Steve (Sheryl) Lange; sisters-in-law Carol Reid and Elizabeth Kellogg; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and countless dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jonas Cook, and her parents, Walter and Thelma (Cowles) Lange. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, September 8, 2023, at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home. The family will receive guests at the funeral home one hour prior to the service, which will be immediately followed by a luncheon in the Lincoln Reception Center (attached to the funeral home). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Isabella Community Soup Kitchen and envelopes for the soup kitchen will be available at the funeral home. So sad. My prayers are with Justin and Jessica. Jeanne was a beautiful woman, Great mother, Great Grandmother, Great wife to Jonas and a Great friend to all. Always has a Big Smile and fun to be around. Good to know that she is now with Jonas again.
