Herbert K. "Bud" Gonya

FREMONT - Herbert "Bud" K. Gonya, 87, of White Rd, Fremont died Thursday, February 19, 2009 at Memorial Hospital, ER. He was born October 22, 1921 in Rice Township to Francis and Louise I. (Darr) Gonya. Bud served as a Seaman First Class on Troop Transport Ships in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII from September 1942 to March 1946. He was awarded the Honorable Discharge Button, Honorable Service Button and Honorable Service Emblem. Bud married Frances A. Janusz on May 29, 1948 at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Fremont and she preceded him in death on September 8, 2006.
He was employed with Mosser Construction as a Carpenter Local #2239 for forty years. Bud was a Life member of VFW #2947, a Life member and Past Commander of American Legion #121 and a member of the Fremont Eagles. He enjoyed playing cards and was a Detroit Tigers and Lions fan.
Bud is survived by his children, Bernie Gonya, Huntington, IN, Ken (Rose) Gonya, Green Springs, OH, Mary Lou (Joe) Kosta, Clyde, OH, Lenny A. Gonya, Fremont, OH; brother, Harold "Joe" (Priscilla) Gonya, Lebanon, PA; sisters-in-law, Jean Gonya, Millersville, OH, Betty Gonya of Oregon; eleven grandchildren; and fourteen great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Frances A. Gonya; brothers, Howard and Donald Gonya; sister and brother-in-law, Ethel (Louie) Burkett.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home & Crematory, 425 E. State St, Fremont, OH. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, February 23, 2009, 11:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 709 Croghan St, Fremont, Fr. David Bruning officiating. Burial will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery
