Frederick Sachs Obituary

Frederick Carl Sachs, 88, died Sunday, March 10, 2024, at Baptist Health Hardin hospital in Elizabethtown, due to complications from a fall on Feb. 29.

He had been a resident of Vitality Living Elizabethtown for the previous 16 months. He was a former long-time resident of Claymont, Delaware, and of Oro Valley, Arizona.

He was born Dec. 8, 1935, in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, to Frederick and Louise (Keim) Sachs. He was a 1953 graduate of Triadelphia High School, Wheeling, West Virginia, where he met his wife, Sandra Mikell Jones. She predeceased him on June 21, 2020, in Tucson, Arizona. They had been married 64 years.

Soon after receiving a B.S. degree in aeronautical engineering from West Virginia University (Class of 1958), he began a 35-year career with Boeing Vertol in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania, where he conducted fatigue tests and rose to the position of manager of the Engineering Test Laboratory. High points included assignments in Kakamigahara, Japan (1986-87), where he was the project engineer for the CH-47J helicopter; and Geldrop, the Netherlands (1994-95), where he assisted with the development of the NH-90 helicopter.

In 1995, he retired to Oro Valley, Arizona. While there, he volunteered at the 390th Memorial Museum and at the Santa Rita Experimental Range. He also enjoyed fishing, hiking and photography and was an avid reader of World War II history.

He is survived by three daughters, Nancy Grey (Thomas Olson) of Las Vegas, Nevada, Gretchen Murphy (Randall) of Rineyville and Christina Humphreys (Richard) of Tucson, Arizona; and two grandsons, Andrew Murphy of Tomah, Wisconsin, and Reid Murphy (Jackie) of Berry, also survive.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no funeral.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Vitality Living Elizabethtown and at Baptist Health Hardin (ER and 3 North Tower) for their outstanding and compassionate care.
