Irene Lewis Obituary

Irene Belt Lewis, 95, of Elizabethtown, died Sunday, March 6, 2016, at Helmwood Healthcare.
She was born Ellen Irene Belt on Nov. 22, 1920, to Banus Belt and Llewellyn Goldie Prentice Belt on Springfield Road in Hardin County, Kentucky.
Mrs. Lewis was a 1939 graduate of Elizabethtown High School and a lifelong member of First Christian Church, where she sang in the choir, taught second grade Sunday school and was a member of the Co-Workers Sunday school class. She was a talented artist and enjoyed crafting for others, including chalk drawings during revivals, making table favors for the church's Christmas banquet, taking art classes and sharing her abilities with others.
Her first job was with the American Needlecraft Co. as bookkeeper. In April 1947, she was hired as clerk for First Federal Saving & Loan Association, making her way through the ranks to serve as secretary/treasurer or comptroller, working full-time until her retirement in April 1985. She remained on the board of directors until November 2000. In October 1951, she married William Henry Lewis and they were blessed with two children.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry Lewis; and her siblings, Shirley Bernice Belt Botto, James Roy Belt, Banus Lloyd "Bud" Belt and Patricia Lynne Belt Neier.
She is survived by her children, Terry Wayne Lewis (Andrea Beth Campbell) of Hampton, Tennessee, and Betty Lynne Lewis Sayre (Wayne Austin Sayre) of Russellville; a brother-in-law, Ivan Kenneth Neier of Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend special thanks to Lina Goodrich and the staff at Ryan's restaurant for the loving care they extended to her over many years.
The funeral is at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, at First Christian Church with the Rev. Wayne Sayre, Brother Chris Kiger and Brother Doug Mitchell officiating. Burial follows in Hardin Memorial Park.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Brown Funeral Home and continues after 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the First Christian Church building fund.
