Retired Col. Byron Crawford Obituary

Retired Col. Byron Douglas Crawford, 79, passed away, Friday Feb. 20, 2015.

He was born to the late Jack Conn and Geneva Griffin Crawford in Renfro Valley but had been a Danville resident for more than 50 years. He was a graduate of Mount Vernon High School and Capital University.

He met his wife, Shelby, in 1957 and they married in 1958 on his way to report for duty in the U.S. Army. Byron attended OCS and over a long army career achieved the rank of colonel, having once served as chief of staff of the 100th Division, a position of which he was very proud. Prior to retirement, Byron also owned and operated Crawford (Gregory) Dry Cleaners and Crawford Insurance Agency in Danville.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanie Mullins.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shelby; a daughter, Laura (Ben) LaRue of Elizabethtown; a son, Stephen Crawford of Danville; a grandson, Jack Crawford; and two granddaughters, Anna and Grace Crawford. Other survivors include two brothers, Jack Conn Crawford (Anna Mae) of Somerset and Bill Crawford (Tabitha) of Orlando, Florida; four nieces and two nephews.

A graveside service with military honors is at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, in Bellevue Cemetery in Danville with the Rev. Otis Clark officiating.

Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Preston Pruitt Spurlin Funeral Home in Danville.

The family requests expressions of sympathy be made in the form of donations to The American Red Cross.
