Gregory Griggs, age 61, of Blue Ridge, passed away, Tuesday, April 9, 2024, in Jasper, Georgia.
He was born December 11, 1962, in Copperhill, Tennessee, to the late J.H. Griggs and Sammie Galloway Griggs.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his niece, Heather Holloway.
Greg graduated from Fannin County High School in the class of 1980. After graduation, he joined the United States Army where he honorably served his country from March 31, 1983 until February 20, 1987. He served in the 1st Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment at the Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Georgia. Later, he was assigned to the 5th Ranger Training Battalion at Camp Frank D. Merrill, outside of Dahlonega, Georgia. In 1991, he was assigned to Company H, 121st Infantry Airborne. He also served in the Governor's Task Force on Drug Interdiction Long Range Surveillance Unit, working side by side with the U.S. Forestry Service. After returning home, and for the next 25 years, Greg was a managing partner of Ocoee Rafting Company and Zipline Canopy Tours.
Greg was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hiking, running, mountain biking, and anything water related. He also enjoyed doing those activities with his canine companions, Brody, Riley, and Bear. In his spare time, he loved to compete in the adventure races that were sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.
Greg is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Blythe and Chris Heaton of Mineral Bluff (their children, Dexter Dawson, Hayden Heaton, and Leah Heaton); partner, Angie Arp of Blue Ridge and her children, Whitney and Brent Mayer (their daughter, Victoria) of Blue Ridge and Mallory and David New of Indian Hills, Colorado; siblings, Pam Medlin and her husband Hal of Blue Ridge, James Griggs of Blue Ridge, and Donna Carver Gay and her husband, Chris of Blue Ridge; nieces and nephews, Barry and Shannon Carver, Stephanie and Spencer Kitchens, Shawn and Becky Carver, Helen Medlin, and Caroline Medlin; special military friends, Mike Dyer, Mike Hurndon, and David Aderhold; and a host of many other special friends.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 12, 2024, at 1 p.m., from the Akins-Cobb Blue Ridge Chapel with the Rev. Joey Buchanan officiating. Music was provided by Hal Medlin and Tammie Mason.
The family visited with friends at the funeral home Thursday evening, April 11, 2024, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.
