JOHN WORTHINGTON BALDWIN obituary

JOHN BALDWIN Obituary

Bernice native John Worthington Baldwin passed away peacefully in his home in Shreveport at the age of 61 on Sunday, November 7, 2010. Born in 1949 and delivered by Dr. Calvin Reeves, he was the eldest son of Jack and Winnie Baldwin of Bernice.
John accomplished many things in his life, starting early as a Congressional Page for Senator Russell Long during his teenage years. He received his undergraduate degree in English from American University in D.C., another undergraduate degree in Education from Louisiana Tech University, and a Master's Degree in Education from Oxford University in England. His pursuit of higher learning finally culminated in a Master's degree in Education Administration from Harvard University in 1999, for which he received a full scholarship to attend.
In the late 1980s, John opened a new school in Shreveport (Hamilton Terrace) for high school dropouts and special needs students who wanted to get more than a GED. John devoted his life to education and activism on behalf of the people in need in the state of Louisiana, at one point even being visited by former First Lady Hillary Clinton to review the innovative teaching techniques employed by his school. He was appointed one of Bill Clinton's "Fifty Faces of Hope" during the first Clinton Administration, the honor of which only one person per state received.
After his long and distinguished career, John did not retire. Instead, he and his wife Marilyn started lecturing on cruise ships, traveling the world. A devout Episcopalian, after his wife became too ill to travel, John devoted all of his time taking care of her and working for Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Shreveport, where they were married in 1976. He even served as Senior Warden of the church for several years before health conditions caused him to give up that position.
As one of John's long-time friends who still lives in Bernice said recently, "I had so much respect and admiration for [John] and the vigor he loaned to each cause he believed in, regardless of public opinion." There is probably no better way to sum up the life of John W. Baldwin in one sentence than that. He will be truly missed by many friends, former students, and former co-workers all across the state whose lives he touched with much caring and compassion. He was taken from us far too soon.
Services will be held at Holy Cross at 3:00 pm on Saturday, November 13, 2010, with a reception afterward at the Hamilton Terrace School, hosted by his adopted daughter Sandra Allen-Foster.
John is survived by his brother Robert Baldwin and his wife Lynda, their children West and Parker Baldwin, all of Bernice; his brother Christopher Baldwin of Dallas, and his daughter Sandra Allen-Foster of Shreveport.
"May there be no moaning of the bar when I put out to sea." Blessed be, brother.

A Tribute to our Humanities Teacher, Mr. John Worthington Baldwin.

Class of 1979 Green Oaks High School
Class song "The Way We Were" by Barbara Streisand from the movie "The Way We Were".

Remembering the impressive and insightful lessons in our Humanities class; venturing on a class trip to the Dallas Museum of Art for the exhibit of Pompeii AD 79; and investigating distinctive religions [B'nai Zion Congregation, St. George Greek Orthodox Church, etc.] in Shreveport were some highpoints of our senior year. These experiences orchestrated by our instructor John Baldwin laid an everlasting framework to appreciate and explore learning for a lifetime.

During this upcoming season of thanksgiving, being able to say "THANK YOU Mr. Baldwin", for making the pursuit of knowledge interesting, enjoyable, and astounding. Memories, smiles, and the laughter--we remember.

I will miss my friend, John Worthington Baldwin, who was also at various times my student, co-worker, confidant, and comrade in the struggle for social justice. In his early childhood in Bernice he and his admirable family were also my next-door neighbors. You are gone, John, but not forgotten.

Yes, he did fight a good fight throughout the course of his life. So much thanks to him and Marilyn that I chose a wonderful career which has taken me around the globe. I still reap the rewards of that choice today.

I am so blessed to have known this truly amazing man. To many of us he was our teacher, leader, father figure and a perfect mentor. I was amazed by his love for Art, which lead to me find my own passion for art through photography. While attending college at L.A. Tech, I received a post card featuring the “Chateau royal de Neuscwanstein” castle from Dr. Baldwin after he had toured seven castles in three days. I still have that post card. His passion for traveling and seeing the beauty of the world set atonements in my life that keeps me looking for all the beauty this world has to offer. I thank him for sharing his travels, knowledge, and his servant leadership spirit with me. You will forever be in my prayers Mr. John Baldwin.

I was one of he first teachers when John opened Hamilton Terrace Learning Center & taught there 7 years. I was so grateful to have known John who encouraged us & the students to strive to overcome all obstacles. I had such respect for him as an educator and a compassionate person. I moved from Shreveport 13 years ago & had no idea Marilyn had died. He truly followed his heart & should be remembered for his honesty and love of children. He wanted everyone to succeed. I know he fulfilled his destiny & is happy. I just hope he knows how much he was appreciated & loved. And I hope his family knows it was an honor to be mentored by him. Fran Tarver (Jones)

Mr Baldwin was one of the teachers at Green Oaks High School who had a definte positve effect on me at a time when I was a difficult teenager. His encouragement, dedication were instrumental in making me the person that I am. To his family, don't be sad, he was a great man that gained respect from students and faculty. I wish heaven had a phone, so I could hear your voice again.
I thought of you today, but thats nothing new.
I thought about you yesterday and days before that too.
I think of you in silence, I often speak your name.
All I have are memories and a picture in a frame.
I love and miss you so much..

How wonderful to read the tributes from John's former students. It would be impossible to find a more caring, intelligent person who blessed so many lives and encouraged so many to live up to their potential. Traveling with Marilyn and John for years enriched my life immeasurably. At least Marilyn didn't have to wait very long for him to join her -- can we expect tours of Heaven soon?

Mr. Baldwin was as smart as he was kind. He taught children from where they were and loved them for who they were, not for what we wanted them to be. He always disciplined with dignity and counseled with courage, competence, and concern. He was a mountain of a man, and I hope to reach the same summit of sincerity and service that he climbed to as an educator and as a human being.

I will miss John greatly. He had a good relationship with all the Interfaith leaders but he was especially close to Mrs. Myers, Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Bryant, Mrs. Thomas, Ms. Edna Brown and Dr. Dobynes. We laughed together, cried together and worked for the common good of all Shreveport/Bossier. Interfaith will carry on the legacy of John Baldwin and the work he started as an Interfaith leader. A Reminiscence

YES, thou art gone! and never more
Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;
But I may pass the old church door,
And pace the floor that covers thee.

May stand upon the cold, damp stone,
And think that, frozen, lies below
The lightest heart that I have known,
The kindest I shall ever know.

Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;

To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.

Truly one of God's Angel. Mr. Baldwin was not only a great teacher and principal he was a friend to all. I can remember when I would get a referral to the principal's office, to me Mr. Baldwin was the only principal, never scolding me only a nice talking to for the reminder of the class hour. He was always there if I needed help in any of my math classes. God call out to Mr. Baldwin telling him that he had fought a good fight, he had finished the race, and he had keep his faith, now it was time to come home to him. Truly one of God's Angels

From day one, I admired the intensity and intelligence that came naturally for Mr. Baldwin. As a principal, he taught me and graciously allowed me(under his "nonchalant" watch)to express myself as an English/Drama teacher at Hamilton Terrace. I remember most that he never changed his hat as an advocate for kids. He was the same then and his spirit will remain as resolute. As an intelligent force in education, Caddo Schools had to contend with his brazen approach and his ability to somehow do whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted.
I will NOT miss him, because his influence and spirit lives on...in my classroom daily!
