David Mendleski Obituary

Mendleski, David

David J. (Sack) Mendleski, age 63, of Berlin, died on Thursday evening June 23, 2011 at the Berlin Memorial Hospital.

He was born on January 23, 1948 in Berlin, the son of the late Norbert Joseph and Catherine Amy (Clinton) Mendleski.

He was a graduate of the Berlin High School with the class of 1966 and then went on to attend the Oshkosh State University.

As a young man he was very involved in scouting and he worked his way through the scouting ranks all the way to the highest honor, Eagle Scout, of which he was presented the award of which he was so proud of, by the then Governor, Warren Knowles.

Sack was the head of the maintenance department for the Sand Knit Corp. of Berlin until the plant closed and then became the head of maintenance for Green Lake County buildings and grounds and was highly respected there until his retirement.

As a young man Sack joined the Berlin Fire Department on May 26, 1969 and he always considered the Fire Department as an extension of his own family. He was always a kind hearted and great firefighter that really never got too excited, but always just got the job done in a professional manner. He worked his way up the ladder from Firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief and finally Deputy Chief, being in that position for several years and then retired. Everyone always loved to hear the stories of all the difficult downtown fires that Sack fought, especially sharing them with the many new firefighters. You could always depend on Sack in a fire situation as he was among the best. Throughout his career he earned several letters of accommodation for not only his heroics but also for a job well done.

Faith was very important in his life and he was a very faithful member of the All Saints Catholic Parish of Berlin, he served as an usher, was a member of the Holy Name Society of the Parish, never missed the Parish festival and would always volunteer to drive some of the ladies that had a hard time getting to Mass.

His really enjoyed going to the March Madness High School Basketball tournaments in Madison with his friends. He also was an avid Packer Fan and held season tickets to the games, Sack also was a "deer hunter" that loved going to his friends cabin up north for the annual event. Most of all after his retirement he loved to socialize every day at several local establishments, he had so very many great close friends, and he was so proud of the fact that they had become part of his family, and they will truly miss him.

He is survived by one brother, Norbert Jr. (Jodi) Mendleski of Phoenix, Arizona, one sister, Rose Marie (Jerrald) Mastenbrook of Littleton, Colorado, a special friend, Chris Mendleski of Madison and his nieces and nephews, Scott (Deborah) Mastenbrook, Kelly (Scott) Morris, Norbert, III. (Stacie) Mendleski, Jessica (Mike) Pindilli, Joseph (Jeremy) Mendleski, Amanda (Mike) Mc Carthy, Nick and Alec Mendleski, also survived by his great nieces and nephews, other relatives and many great friends.

Funeral services with the Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the All Saints Catholic Church of Berlin with the Rev. Jerome Maksvytis officiating and burial will follow in the Saint Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery of Berlin.

Immediately following the services at the cemetery all are invited to the City Inn of Berlin for a time of sharing memories of him and a luncheon with the family.

Relatives and friends may call at the Wiecki-Skipchak Funeral Home of downtown Berlin on Tuesday June 28, 2011 from 4 to 8 p.m. with a Parish Rosary to be recited at 7:45 p.m., and may also call at the Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9 to 10 a.m., before we leave for the services at the church.

A memorial has been established to the Tom Guden Memorial Fund, of which he was so enthusiastic about and or the Alzheimer's Association in his memory.

Sack, may you now join your parents in that special place that you have earned and may you now rest in eternal peace, we bid goodbye to you now only until the day that we will meet with you again.

RoseMarie and Norby - our condolences to you. We were blessed to share a few moments with David on May 28th this year. He had a kind heart and soft words whenever we spoke. A gentle man that will be missed. It will be hard to believe he isn't there amongst the Berlin happenings. That was always a connection, tho somewhat distant, that kept us there, too. We are sending thoughts and love. Tom and Karen Everson.
