Maney Flegler Obituary

Flegler Jr., Maney

A resident of Oshkosh since July of 1952, MANEY FLEGLER, JR., went home to be with his Lord on Friday, January 11, 2013.

Maney joined the Oshkosh Fire Department on October 16, 1954 as a rookie at the Congress Ave station. During his thirty-six year career, he touched many lives while working his way through the ranks of the Department. Maney concluded a distinguished career in 1990 as Chief of the Department. Among his many roles, which included Captain Instructor, he was instrumental in establishing the Department's scuba search and rescue team. In addition, he served as President of Local 316 Fire Fighters Union Governing Board, taught safety and CPR courses for the Red Cross and was often called upon by local schools to discuss fire safety and fire-fighting careers.

Maney was an avid deer hunter and outdoorsman who cherished his time spent at his home in the woods in Waushara county. He is fondly known by his family as St Francis of Assissi because of his love and care for stray animals. An avid and competitive golfer, he was a 30-year member of the Lakeshore Men's Thursday Twilight Golf League, which included terms as both President and Secretary.

Maney is survived by his devoted wife of sixty-one years, Patricia; his daughter Connie Odell (Al); son Kim Flegler (Toni); son Michael Flegler; daughter Victoria Morris (Jim); daughter Barbara Zellmer (Mike); daughter Mary Beth Leib (Steve.) He is also survived by 7 cherished grand children: Sean Odell; Uriah Odell; Jesse Raddatz, Jacob Zellmer, Rachel Zellmer; Maxwell Leib and Noah Leib.

The family would like to say a special thank you to the caregivers at Azura Memory Care Oshkosh for their loving and compassionate care of Maney during these past 18 months.

Services celebrating Maney's life will be held at Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home, 100 Lake Pointe Drive, Oshkosh at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 with Pastor Ben Peterson presiding. Friends may call on the family at Konrad-Behlman beginning at 10:30 a.m. until time of the service.

Memorials have been established for the Parkinson's Foundation and the Oshkosh Humane Society.

For what ever reason I decided to look up Maney Flegler and thankfully found this web-site. I remember working with Mike as his case worker and meeting his wonderful parents and sister. I am retired, but still preaching part time in Salisbury, NC. My thoughts and prayers are with the family even though I can't remember the names.

I just attend Maney's funeral,it squeezed my heart to hear the beautiful tribute the family gave to their dad. There were tears, laughter, and good stories. That room was filled with love! Maney is gone physically but will live forever in all he left behind. God Bless you all!

DAD WAS "PROMOTED TO GLORY". I LEARNED THAT PHRASE WHEN I WORKED FOR THE SALVATION ARMY. I THINK IT IS THE MOST COMFORTING AND TRUE PHRASE FOR DEALING WITH OUR LOVED ONES.

I LOVE EACH AND EVERY ONE OF MY FAMILY.

My deepest sympathies to Pat, Barb, Marybeth, Vicky, Kim, and Michael.
Maney played a very important part in my life...he told me the "facts of life" about my uncontrolled drinking, and my poor relationship ability. In my story, I still tell how he took an interest in me, and got me to go to AA.
God Bless him, and his family.
He was a fine example as a husband, father, Marine, boxer, golfer, Oshkosh fire chief, fire 'fighter"..not fireman,(that dummy powers a train), and i'm sure grandpa.
He may have appeared gruff to some, but he was a caring and loving Teddy Bear.
May he rest in peace.
