David Erwin Obituary

On January 1st 2024, at 75 years of age, David Michael Erwin left his earthly bonds to seek out an awaited and blessed eternity. In life, David was a most special person who loved abundantly and accepted everyone without prejudice or judgment. He was a member of a rare breed indeed. The world needs multitudes more such as he.

Born on January 22, 1948, the fourth of six children, David was raised in the Apostolic Church of Christ in Auburn Hills, MI. This was where he learned and fully absorbed what Christ tried to teach all of us - to "love thy neighbor as thyself". Nobody did it better than David.

David went to Avondale High School and was the last athlete at the school to letter in four varsity sports. He then went to Oakland University where he met his future bride in a Western Institutions course in 1964. Soon after, David enlisted in the Army and served in Vietnam - earning a silver star, bronze star, and two Purple Hearts. The war left him severely disabled, but his faith and strong will allowed him to achieve both his bachelor's and then a master's in Guidance and Counseling. This knowledge and experience proved valuable during his 25 year career as a Veteran's Employment Representative with the State of Michigan.

David is survived by his loving and loved wife of 44 years, Elayna. During their years together, David and Elayna enjoyed traveling, particularly to their cabin in Rifle Lake, and hosting friends and family for card games or holidays in their home in Rochester Hills. David is also survived by sisters Debby (Paul) Jokisch, Dorothy (Jim) Sanders, and Mary (Dan) Newman and a brother, Robert Erwin. Awaiting him are his parents, Madeline Rose and William Henry Erwin, as well as his sister, Madeline (Darrell) Stewart. This family blessed David with 19 adored nieces and nephews. Adding to his joy were 38 great nieces and nephews who, in turn, are expanding the family. With good fortune, many will be just as their uncle David was: sensitive, loving, benevolent, and blessedly empathetic to all. He will be so very, very, missed - always.

Memorial services for David will be held in the spring.
