Dear Victoria and Bob,
My deepest condolences on the loss of your son Joe. I wish I knew how to reach you directly, because I want to thank you for the lovely tribute you wrote about our son Mark and his influence on your son while he was a student at UM. If anyone could get students excited about geology and earth science, it was Mark. There is definitely no finer place to study those topics than in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Mark called it his "Happy Place."
I, too, find the coincidences between our sons amazing. Mark's favorite bread to make was also sourdough. I'm sure Mark loved the fact that he had an influence on Joe becoming a teacher....and a science teacher at that! I can see where they would have been fast friends with similar interests in baking pies and game nights.
Our souls have been crushed, as I'm sure yours have as well, by the loss of such wonderful young men in the prime of their lives. It is the photos and the memories that keep us going. Nothing, though, is more comforting than to hear from people like yourself with first-hand knowledge of Mark's positive influence on other people, especially students. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to write. It is an act of kindness that means so much to me, Ted and Steff (Mark's father and sister). We wish you peace in the tough days and years ahead.
