William Bishop Obituary

William (Bill) Harvey Bishop Jr. passed away on September 19, 2022, at the age of 87. Bill resided in Lake Orion for the past 45 years after moving from the Troy/Royal Oak Area. Born on December 16, 1934 to William Harvey Bishop Sr. and Grace Louise (Ogg) Bishop. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Sharon (Garnsey) Bishop and his two daughters, Diane (John) Porter and Jackie (Brad) Van Leuven. 6 Grandchildren, Ryan (Callie) Van Leuven, Bre (Michael) Anderson, Alissa (Craig) Swan, Kyle (Katherine) Van Leuven, Jesse Porter, Delaney Van Leuven (Alex Broadworth) and 11 Great Grandchildren, Brianna, Aspen, Parker, Hunter, Heaven, Chase, Ryleigh, Owen, Grayson, Kinsley & Finleigh. He was preceded in death by his brother, Norman and survived by siblings, Robert, Joan, Gary (Lee) Bishop, and sister-in-law Marie Bishop, along with many loved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bill loved many sports including hunting, fishing, bowling, golfing, and softball. He was a coach in his younger years and was very proud to have helped start the baseball and football programs in Troy and was instrumental in implementing the rule "every kid must play in every game". Bill enlisted in the Army National Guard April 1, 1953 and was honorably discharged April 1, 1961. He made his career as an electrical engineer graduating from Lawrence Institute of Technology and was a proud member of IBEW Local 58. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Moose, American Legion, and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. Bill stayed busy as he was always willing and took pride in helping others with their home projects along with their electrical needs. Family was very important to him and he loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and siblings. He was a true fan and tried to attend as many of his grandchildren's activities as he could. It didn't matter if he liked the activity or not, if they were involved he was there supporting them. If he couldn't make it in person he would be sure to ask how they did and he'd gladly watch videos of them. He also raved over their arts and crafts as if they were the best he had seen every single time. He also took a vested interest in their career choices, large purchases, home plans, hobbies, projects, and also gave amazing advice. He was a true family man with traditional values and will be greatly missed. A memorial Service to Celebrate his life will be held at 1 p.m. on October 15, 2022 at Modetz Funeral Home, Silverbell Chapel. Family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service. For more information or to leave a memory or condolence please go to: www.modetzfuneralhomes.com

Among the many other things Bill Bishop was in life, he was the big running back I handed the ball off to and got out of his way when we were teammates for the Troy Colts in 1951. He was as tough on the football field as he was kind and friendly everywhere else. The fine summary in his obituary of a life well lived should be an example and inspiration to his family and friends.

Bill was the first person to greet me as I began moving in next door. He drove up the drive hopped out of the car and , with that great smile said, welcome to the neighborhood. I'm Bill and my wife is Sharon. We live next door. Is there anything I can do to help you? Those kind words were such a relief. That smile made me feel welcome. I knew that if I needed anything I could count on Bill and Sharon to help me out. Bill was such a kind, friendly and helpful individual. He will be missed.
