David M. Graf Sr.

David Graf Obituary

David Graf, a Past Commodore of the Olympia Yacht club and retired IBM'er, died on Saturday, June 28, 2008, after a two month illness. Dave enjoyed the outdoors with his family, particularly boating, camping and fishing. Dave built the first family boat in 1958, an 18' plywood/glass cuddy cabin boat, in the garage. This led to owning larger boats, such as his pride and joy the White Cap.
Dave was born February 19, 1931 in Aberdeen, was raised in Montesano living on the family cattle farm, and graduated from Montesano High School in 1948. After attending Central College in Ellensburg on a football scholarship, Dave joined the Air Force and became an aircraft electronics technician for four years. While stationed in Denver, Colorado, he met and later married his wife of 49 years, Edna, in Arvada, Colorado in 1952.
As an IBM field service engineer for 31 years, he was known as a talented problem solver on the new technology known as computer key punch systems. Dave was an active member of the local Coast Guard Auxiliary for fifteen years, and most recently a member of the local fly fishing club.
Dave is preceded in death by his wife, Edna who passed away suddenly on September 18, 2001; parents, Fred and Lillian Graf; and older brother, Fred Graf, Jr.
Dave is survived by four children, daughter, Marian Reilly and her husband Jim, of Fresno California; three sons, Dave Graf Jr. and his wife Lora, of Scappoose Oregon; Larry Graf and his wife Cathy, of Snohomish; and Rick Graf, of Olympia; as well as nine grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Saint Peters Hospital and Evergreen Convalescent Center for their care and compassion over the last two months.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2008 at Funeral Alternatives, Masonic Center 455 North Street Tumwater, WA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Memorial and Honor Program, National Processing Center, PO Box 11537, Alexandria, Virginia, 22312.
