Donna Kelly

1958 - 2025

Donna VanHouten Kelly died peacefully at home, surrounded by friends and family on December 24th, 2024 at age 66. She is survived by her children Cassady, Kayla, Shea, and Eve as well as her grandchildren Kenzie, Aiden, Layla, and Hazel.

Born to Florence and Henry VanHouten in Queens, NY on June 10th, 1958, Donna was the youngest of four siblings. She demonstrated a love of animals and her fellow humans at an early age, making many lifelong friends while attending Catholic school in Queens. New York was also where she met and married the love of her life, John Kelly. Their passion for the vibrant 1970s NYC music scene led them to many memorable concerts.

After starting her family, Donna moved to Olympia, WA where she became deeply involved in the fabric of her community. Her great passion was providing resources and a soft place to land for anyone needing support, be they family, friends, animals, or even strangers. It wasn't unusual for her to return home from an errand with a new pet, or a new friend needing a hot meal or companionship. Her focus on others was reflected in her career choices, having worked for developmentally challenged adults, teens with learning difficulties, a multicultural bookseller, and lastly as a mental health ombudsman. Her legacy for service lives on through The Furniture Bank of Thurston County, which she and John founded.

Her passions later in life were her beloved grandchildren, and elaborate home-cooked meals and games shared with friends and family. Her adventurous, individualistic spirit persisted and she continued to cherish new foods, crafts, and experiences while exploring her local community until her final days.

A casual, joyful party celebrating Donna's life will be held Saturday, April 26th from noon until evening at 1826 Lakewood Dr. SE, Olympia WA. All are welcome.
