Jay Cort Mason

Jay Cort Mason, MD Jay Cort Mason, 76, died on November 10, 2016 from Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Jay was born in Seattle to Cort and Lillian (Van Borg) Mason. He graduated from Lakeside School, the University of Washington and Marquette University Medical School. Jay revered all forms of life. He particularly accepted and respected cultural differences. He said he became a psychiatrist to help others achieve their best. From 1971 to 1974 Jay served in the Indian Health Service in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. Jay was an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the UW School of Medicine and Chief of a Day Treatment Center at the Seattle VA Hospital. He worked at various public mental health clinics in Grays Harbor and Thurston Counties. He also consulted with school based mental health services in both communities. Jay loved swimming, surfing and everything else about Hawaii. Jay grew roses and tropical plants. He was a life long student. Jay took great pleasure in turning his photographs into digital paintings to share with friends. At home Jay always had a beloved dog by his side. Jay leaves behind his wife of 47 years, Judy (Jamieson) Mason and their son Joshua Mason. Suggested remembrances include the American Cancer Society (specifically for research into Squamous Cell Carcinoma) or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
