Stanley Morris Obituary

Stanley Martin Morris

Stanley Martin Morris, 82, passed away on May 15, 2010, in Olympia, Washington, following a 2-year battle with cancer.
He was born on September 28, 1927, in Port Angeles, Washington, to Harold S. and Valda I. (Wait) Morris, the oldest of six siblings. He left school in his mid-teens to work in the logging camps in the Lake Ozette area. A childhood bicycle accident precluded him from military service, and he continued to work as a logger in the forests of the Washington and Oregon coast.
He married Mildred L. Mickelson on January 22, 1950, in Coos Bay, Oregon. In the mid-50's they moved to Quilcene, Wash. , where Stan worked for Buck Mountain Logging Co. and later as a construction worker on the Hood Canal Bridge. In the early 1960's the family moved to Port Angeles where they lived until 1968 when Stan, who now worked construction for the Bonneville Power Administration, was transferred to Eugene, Oregon. In 1974 he was transferred to Olympia where he retired from the BPA in 1992.
After retirement, Stan and Millie became "snow birds" and spent their winter months in Big River, California, where they made many new friends and enjoyed exploring the desert southwest.
Then, after nearly 54 years of marriage, Millie died of a stroke on December 5, 2003, whereupon Stan returned to their home in Olympia.
Stan was an avid hunter, fisherman and rock and coin collector who knew the mountains, forests and rivers of western Washington and Oregon like few others. He will always be fondly remembered for his colorful storytelling about these places and pursuits as well as the tall tales of hardships and hijinks in 1940's logging-camp life.
Stan is survived by six children, including daughters and sons-in-law Vicki and David Sobieck of Sequim, Cheryl and Jeff Baar of Sequim, Patty and Don Burnette of Port Angeles, sons Ronald Morris and Roger Morris of Olympia and daughter Darlene Morris of Olympia, 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brother and sister-in-law Raymond and Nancy Morris of Shelton, sister and brother-in-law Beverly and Dick Davidson of Port Angeles and sister Lila Morris of Port Angeles.
Those who preceded him in death include his wife and parents, sister and brother-in-law Norine and Howard Hockman, brother David Morris.
A private family service and burial took place on May 21, 2010, at Mills and Mills Funeral Home and Memorial Park in Tumwater, Washington. The family would like to thank all the friends, neighbors and family for the many cards, flowers and well wishes you have sent, they are greatly appreciated.

I am Stan's cousin--his mother's sisters third born, Roger Gallacci. I am a few years younger than Stan and my older brothers who ran around with Stan and Ray---and I was never one of the "big guys" bunch. So I did not really connect with Stan till the Morris family gathering there in PA a couple years ago--thanks to Lila's good work. I am greatly impacted by Stan's passing. I did not realize how much he was a pillar of my universe---He was just such a strong presence in my psyche that helped to hold it all together. He met life head on and made his world work. I will miss the chance to meet him again. I think we will all have a great party sometime out there in God's great universe. Roger

The world has lost a good man, a great story teller and an indomitable spirit.
The pictures required some paper goods but what a great job putting this together!
Bye bye Stan you were a good brother in law to me. I will remember you with love.
