WICHITA, Kan. - Joan E. (Fisher) Powers-Torrey, 84, passed away peacefully on Jan. 1, 2016 surrounded by family. Born to Vincent and Agnes (Stoltz) Fisher on March 28, 1931, in Plymouth, she graduated from PHS, Class of '49. She married Walter Powers on Jan. 31, 1953. She was later joined in marriage to James J. Torrey on Aug. 10, 1996. Joan was professionally employed as a legal secretary and later as a Special Education Paraeducator. A devout Roman Catholic, Joan was an accomplished musician, serving as the organist in several area parishes. Known for her fashion flair, Joan loved all things purple. Her greatest joy was found in raising her six children. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Vincent and Agnes Fisher; sister, Helen Cook; and daughter, Monica Jerkovich. She is survived by her husband, James Torrey; daughters, Paula (Leo) Traverzo, Ruth (Terry) Funk, and Erica Nance; sons, Brian (Lisa) Powers and Bruce Powers; sister, Marilyn (Phil) Milner; 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A Rosary Vigil was held on Jan. 5 with the Celebration of Life Mass held on Jan. 6, both at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Wichita, Kan., Fr. Dan Spexarth officiating. Final interment was at Veteran Memorial Cemetery, Winfield, Kan.
