John Shively Obituary

BLOOMSBURG - John P. Shively, 78, passed away with his family by his side at the Bloomsburg Health Care Center on Thursday, June 10, 2021.

Born Sept. 30, 1942, John was the son of the late Lester and Amy Pearl Shively. He was a proud veteran, having served in the United States Navy onboard the USS Claude Jones alongside his brothers Bob and Tom.

John grew up in Clearfield and resided there until he moved to Bloomsburg in 1983 for his job as a Regional Manager at DC Guelich Explosives. John was an active member of the Wesley United Methodist Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir and was also a member of the Bloomsburg American Legion, the Bloomsburg Rotary Club and the Bloomsburg Elks Lodge. John was a very charitable man who enjoyed participating in multiple mission trips and cutting the grass for Scott Little League for many years.

In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by three siblings: Max, Bob and Mary Jo. He is survived by his large, loving family, including children: Laura Benes and her husband Glen of Northampton, John Shively and his wife Keri, Kate Billmeyer and her husband Alex and Craig Shively, all of Bloomsburg. Siblings: Sue Lloyd (Dave), Tom Shively, Clara Veres (Tom) and Toby Shively (Mary) and grandchildren: Christopher and Zachary Kostantewicz, Mackenna Shively, Maddie and Aiden Snyder and Libby and Anna Grace Shively. John is also survived by a great grandson, Layne Cleary, and numerous nieces and nephews.

John loved spending time with family and friends and attending church functions. In his younger years, John enjoyed running, boating, and hunting. A life-long Penn State football fan, he could often be found enjoying a cheeseburger on Friday nights at the Wagon Shed, Sunday lunch at Perkins or a cold beer with friends at the Legion or the Elks. John especially enjoyed meeting his friends each morning both at the McDonald's Coffee Club and the Bloomsburg YMCA.

Services are under the direction of Dean Kriner Funeral Home, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg. Friends may call Monday, June 14 from 5-7 p.m. with military honors at 5 p.m. and brief remarks at 7 p.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Clearfield.

The family will gather at the St. Charles Cafe in Clearfield on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, in Clearfield and invite friends and family to join them for a toast to be offered in John's name at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts in John's memory be sent to Wesley United Methodist Church in Bloomsburg.
