BROOKVILLE - Leslie "Les" Harmon Turner, 90, of Brookville, passed away at home on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2025, in Brookville.

He was born in Woodland, on March 1, 1934, to the late Harmon D. and Olive M. (Graham) Turner.

Les graduated from Clearfield High School in Clearfield with the class of 1952. He received his Bachelor of Science in Education in 1956 from Lock Haven State College in Lock Haven with majors in both Physical Education and History.

Les started his teaching and wrestling coaching career at Shamokin High School in Shamokin for two years, then he taught at Moshannon Valley High School in Houtzdale for five years, before moving on to Brookville High School in Brookville, where he taught physical education and history for 30 years, and also developed one of the top AA wrestling programs in the state, before retiring in 1993.

Les married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Verlee (Condon) Turner on Aug. 22, 1953, in Woodland; she survives him. Their marriage of over 71 years was a testament of genuine commitment, happiness, and pure love, as they built a life together and raised a family.

Les was a devoted member of the Brookville First Methodist Church in Brookville, and served as both a Sunday school and Bible school teacher.

Les had a fond love for reading and reciting poetry. He enjoyed other activities such as fishing, camping, swimming, and woodworking. From 1966-1972, he served as the Aquatic Director for Camp Mountain Run Boy Scout Camp in Penfield, and also conducted Clarion University Wrestling Clinics in Clarion. Les devoted over 37 years to coaching wrestling and many other sports.

His unwavering commitment and dedication to the wrestling program was clearly recognized, resulting in his induction into the Clearfield County Sports Hall of Fame, the Lock Haven University Wrestling Hall of Fame, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, and the Pennsylvania Coaching Hall of Fame. Les's influence on the wrestling community and beyond will continue to be remembered forever.

Les was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He cherished the times his family spent together, making lasting memories. Les was devoted to them and gave his unwavering support to all their pursuits throughout their lives. He was a faithful friend and an exceptional role model to a great many people. His lasting legacy will be etched in the memories and affections of countless individuals who treasured him. Les will be deeply missed by everyone who loved him.

Coach Turner was one of my high school teachers and he and Verlee and family lived next my grandmother when he taught at Mo Valley. He was a wonderful person and wrestling coach. He deserved all the honors he received through the years. My deepest sympathy to Verlee and the family. May your memories sustain you. Rest in peace dear friend and teacher.
