Dale Stoops Obituary

Dale Ordean "Dean" Stoops, 87 years of age, passed from this world Thursday, May 1, 2014, at Providence Place of Chambersburg where he had resided for the last two and a half years. Prior to this he was a resident of Mentzer Gap Road, Waynesboro, his entire life. He had been in failing health for the last three years.
He was born in Quincy Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, on Dec. 13, 1926, and was the son of the late Clyde Stoops and the late Anna (Mentzer) Stoops Bomberger.
In his young life he worked on his grandfather's farm which was near his home and worked as a caddy at the Waynesboro Country Club. Family lived all around him and was the center of his life. Dean graduated from Quincy High School with the class of 1945. He enlisted in the Army in June 1945 and served in the Finance Corps until his honorable discharge in December 1946. He graduated from LDS Business College in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1947 with a degree in accounting.
He was employed at Letterkenny Army Depot in the accounting department and retired in 1972 after 20 years of service. In his later life he worked as an aide to Robert Zimmerman of Waynesboro after his accident.
Dean enjoyed playing golf, swimming, listening to and playing music, collecting antiques (especially flow blue china), and spending time with family. He loved children. For years he worked at compiling genealogy on the Stoops and Mentzer families.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints where he served in his earlier years as a Stake Missionary. He valued and supported missionary work throughout his life. He also served as Superintendent of the Sunday School in the Hagerstown Branch and in various other teaching positions. Dean was an accomplished pianist and organist and shared his talent by playing for church services for 30 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, C. Robert Stoops, his sister-in-law, Geraldine Stoops, and his stepfather, Joseph Morgan Bomberger.
He is survived by an aunt, Beulah Mentzer, of Waynesboro and five nieces and nephews: Donna Willette and her husband Don of Dallastown, Diane Michalsky and her husband Larry of Waynesboro, Cheryl Peters and her husband Glenn of Waynesboro, R. Michael Stoops and his wife Deborah of Seven Valleys and Dale Stoops of Waynesboro. He is also survived by 21 great nieces and nephews and a large number of great-great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 5, 2014, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 11887 Mentzer Gap Road, Waynesboro, with Bishop Michael Hanosek officiating. Burial will follow in Quincy Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services Monday afternoon, in the church.
