John Campbell Obituary

Mr. John R. "Jerry" Campbell, 78, of Waynesboro, PA, passed away Saturday morning, June 9, 2018 in the Waynesboro Hospital.
Born May 16, 1940 in Cambridge, Massachusetts he was the son of the late William P. and Gladys (Gibson) Campbell.
He was a graduate of Jenkintown High School (PA) with the Class of 1958. Mr. Campbell then went on to obtain his Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Maryland in 1965 and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Ball State University in 1973.
Mr. Campbell began his military career in the United States Air Force during Vietnam. He worked his way up to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel by the time he retired, May 16, 2000. During his time in the Air Force he earned a numerous awards and recognitions, including; USAF Master Security Police Badge; Meritorious Service Medal w/1 OLC, AF Commendation Medal w/2 OLC, and Air Force Outstanding Unit Award.
He and his wife of over 46 years, Francina M. (Paardekooper) Campbell were married March 14, 1972.
He was a member of the Hawley Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder; VFW Post #1810, Brentwood, PA, where he served as Commander in 1983; American Legion Post #239, Cascade, MD, where he was Commander in 1989; DAV – life member; the AMVETS Post# 172. Fairfield, PA – life member; Air Force Security Police – life member; USAF Safeside Association – life member; 29th Division Association, Lantern Post 729; Acacia Lodge No. 586 F.&A.M., Waynesboro, where he served as secretary from 2002-2007; Zembo Shrine Temple, Harrisburg, PA; Harrisburg Consistory, where he was part of the stage crew; Franklin County Shrine Club; South Penn Scottish Rite Club; the NRA; the Air Force Association – life member; the North American Fishing Club – Life member; Boy Scouts of American Organization Representative at Hawley Memorial Presbyterian Church, Blue Ridge Summit, PA; Order of the Arrow, Guneukitschik Lodge #317; Blue Ridge Sportsman's Association; South Mountain Rod and Gun Club; Waynesboro Fish and Game.
Mr. Campbell enjoyed the outdoors and fishing.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two children, Rebecca L. Avery of Loudon, NH and Brian T. Campbell of Waynesboro, PA; five grandchildren; and one sister, Judith C. Conner of Georgetown, TX.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by an infant brother, William D. Campbell.
Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, June 14, 2018, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, with Rev. William Hammann officiating. Burial will follow in Harbaugh Church Cemetery, Rouzerville, PA, where military graveside honors will be conducted by the honor guard of Charles Nitterhouse V.F.W. Post #1599 honor guard. ? The family will receive friends one hour prior to services in the funeral home, where a Masonic funeral will be held by the members of Acacia Lodge #586 F.& A.M. at 11:00 A.M., just prior to the religious service. ? In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Hawley Memorial Presbyterian Church, PO Box 582, Blue Ridge Summit, PA 17214 or Shriner's Hospitals for Children at www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org
