10 years have passed Dad since you died. But you are probably happier this year than last since your beloved wife and partner, Patricia Murphy died a few weeks ago on August 20 2024. She now lays besides you and all is well with the world.

I remember the story when you bought the headstone from a patient of yours, I think. You were proud and glad it had been completed. Truly a blessing you could nearly see the cemetary and headstone through from your bathroom window where you shaved each day. I think its a blessing. Well it makes visiting much easier as visiting you the past 10 years with Mom was a daily ritual for her and the many offspring.

Back to the story. You had the headstone carved with the date of your birth and Mom's birth. Mom was horrified when she learned anyone driving by could see her age. Not that a few figures carved into stone could capture the energy captured into her physical body.

Your daughter Martha, along with Kathleen and granddaughter Gretchen gave wonderful eulogies. You were there so you know. Martha remembered story of your first meeting Patricia Murphy. It was Crystal Beach, probably summer of 1952. She was renting a cottage with some girl friends. You had a date with one of her housemates. When you arrived, your date was upstairs getting ready. While you waited, Pat was in the kitchen, a whirlwind of activity, cleaning cooking, who knows what else. But you were so impressed you named her PM, perpetual motion. And shortly thereafter you asked her for a date and the rest was history.

I don't need to tell you this, but she really never stopped moving for the next 72 years. Even 2 weeks before she died, she was up and around, sitting on the front porch and waving and watching the happenings going up and down Clark Street. After 60 years, finally put a chair on front porch and it was a blessing. Funny thing happened after she died. Your daughter Mary Pat was walking back home to her house down the street, the day before Mom died. As she walked past the front door, she saw a large Eagle and clouds right above the portico. She told her siblings this story a few days after the funeral. I asked her if she thought that was you, but she thought it was Mom. The spirit lives.

As mom breathed her final breaths on your bed of 62 years I was reading from a small biblical book called the The Imitations of Christ by Thomas Kempis. You were given the book in 1958, then gave it to me in 1979 and then I found it after you died in 2014. I brought it with me as I traveled back to OP to be with Mom the family.

As she breathed her last breaths, Dan and I were in the room. Anne knew Mom loved English and poetry so I believe; as her spirit rose to meet yours, after 10 long years apart, I read this Emily Dickinson poem

Because I could not stop for death
He kindly stopped for me.
The carriage held but just ourselves
and Immortality.

God Bless you Dad and rejoice in the presence of your wife. Your life and marriage to Patricia Murphy continues to animate this world. Love Peter and all your descendants.

A giant has fallen, and a gentle giant at that. I remember being an altar boy at Joe and Pat's wedding. Fishing in Canada, skiing south of O.P. Drinking champagne on the S.S. France. So many great discussions. So much fun. So much wisdom. Our hearts go out to Pat and the large, extended Ruh clan. A family like no other. Joe, say hello to "Tyrone" and Hazel.... Dick and Liz

To all the Ruhs-
What a unique time we had growing up in our neighborhood. I think I count 10 families, almost 100 kids. It was the norm for us. So many great memories with your family and our parents shenanigans!
My condolences to each of you as we celebrate your Dad's long life and the creativeness your Dad brought to parenting.
Sincerely,

Speaking for all of the Greer's, where would we be without Dr. Joe? Fortunately, for all of us, Joe and Pat, Jim and Miriam became fast friends that fateful day in August 1960, and what a ride it's been. Friend, neighbor, Doctor, mentor, counsel, teacher...all of these and more. Hail to a life well lived. "Thou shalt find thy dream to be a noonday light and truth to thee."

September 10, 2014

To the entire Ruh family, we extend our deepest sympathy for your loss.

Dear Ruh Family, and especially Martha Ruh Mangan,
I never saw a man enjoy his wife and family as much as I saw Dr Ruh! My sympathy and joy of his fine example I send to you all! Whether he was on the dance floor, handing out Halloween Candy or just relaxing at home Dr Ruh was smiling about his life, his children and the love of his life Mrs Ruh, I always adored that about him and learned that his way of life was a happy one! You were a great inspiration to us all Dr Ruh and will be dearly missed! Martha my sweet friend, the apple of his eye, at this time however sad you may be I know deep in your heart your Dad lives and through your wonderful life you too carry on his joyful spirit! See you soon my friend and to the Ruh Family, celebrate his life as he so enjoyed his life loving and caring for you all... Much love Meg Ford Latona

My Dad loved his wife, Patricia Murphy, his work, family and friends. A curious man, always willing to listen and learn - with his patients, his medical colleagues, his family and his friends. A great storyteller. Another proud son of South Buffalo, PS72, South Park, Canisius and UB, a special place in a special time. Please share your thoughts, prayers and stories. Requiescat in Pace
