Carl Spieckerman Obituary

Carl, a fixture in the Solano County criminal defense community for 40 years, was proud to have dedicated his professional life to the representation and assistance of the poor, marginalized, and underserved people of Vallejo, Fairfield and surrounding cities. Ever a free-spirit, Carl could often be seen driving his convertible around Vallejo with classic rock blaring out as he gave his iconic peace sign to his many acquaintances. A fiercely independent man, til the end, Carl did things his way. Though a progressive hippie and fierce critic of many politicians, Carl was also a proud US Army veteran. Carl was tremendously glad that his son, Damian Spieckerman, followed in his footsteps as a criminal defense attorney. Carl's grandkids are blessed to have inherited his keen and curious mind, his love of reading, and his mischievous sense of humor. I was 15 years old when Spieckerman represented me on a felony charge that could have sent me away for a long time. I wasn't completely innocent but wasn't completely guilty either. I remember pouring my heart out to this elderly white man who probably wanted to see my demise but I was wrong. This was around the same time when some other young Blacks broke into his office and beat him badly. I thought all hope was lost until I discovered the depths that Spieckerman went to find out who I was. He spoke with my teachers and found out I was a diamond in the rough. I've always been a great student, a person yearning for knowledge but the pressures of the street life and whatnot interfered. Spieckerman saw this and acted. Instead of doing 5 years as requested by the DA, I did a 90 day evaluation and failed that. Still young and not wanting to accept responsibility. But instead of the judge going through with the initial 5 years, Spieckerman pleaded that I'd be given another shot at society. I was granted another chance and have since been an attribute to the community rather than a cancer. Now I seek abstinence from society on some private land in Jamaica, just like how Spiekerman would've liked it. May your soul rest easy Carl. Thank you for believing in me.

During my 20 years engaged in the justice system I often encountered Carl, often on opposing ends of an issue. I always found him to be a pleasure to deal with. He was always honest and fair with his client's best interests at heart.He had the ability to bring a balancing sense of humor to stressful situations.

To the family
Me Spieckeman know to most as Carl was caring giving of his time and would help anyone. Free spirited that's for sure. He will truly be missed. May he be in peace

MY MENTOR;
God saw you getting tired
and a cure was not to be.
So he put his arms around you
and whispered "Come to Me".
A golden heart stopped beating,
hard working hands now rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best.
