John Oliveira Obituary

After a long and accomplished life, John M. Oliveira passed away on Monday, April 10, 2023, at Ann's Choice Senior Living Community in Warminster, PA, at the age of 90. As a young boy, John and his family moved from the city streets of Germantown, where he was born, to rural Chester County, where his parents were caretakers of a country estate. He graduated from Coatesville High School, where he met the love of his life, Sarah Johnston. He attended Villanova University and graduated with a B.S in Education and a Master of Arts degree. After graduation, John enlisted in the United States Army, and served with the Occupation Forces in Germany. After serving in the military, John began his teaching career at Valley Forge Military Academy; after five years, he moved to Bedford Hills, New York, where he taught in the Edgemont School District as a math teacher for 35 years. While working at Edgemont, he spent several summers at Clarkson College, where he earned a second Master's degree in Science. His school commitment extended beyond the classroom, as he was the cross country coach for 10 years, assistant track coach, and scout for the basketball team. After retirement, John provided math tutoring to students at the Lansdale Public Library and later Archbishop Wood High School in Warminster, PA. John was actively involved in the Edgemont Teacher's Association, and held the positions of Salary Chairman, Chief Negotiator, and Treasurer. He was proud to be elected and serve as President of the Association for three terms. John was also a Delegate to the New York Legislature, promoting the educational needs of the community with an emphasis on how to enhance the experience of every student. John and Sarah were married in December 1956, and lived on the campus of Valley Forge Military Academy. Their first son, John, was born during this time; where the family was introduced to President Eisenhower during one of the President's visits to the Academy. After moving to New York, the family grew with the births of Michael and Anne. In 1971 the family moved to Lansdale, PA, where their children, John, Michael, and Anne graduated from North Penn High School. In 2010, John and Sarah moved to Ann's Choice. John had a variety of interests and passions: he was a Red Cross volunteer, served as Judge of Elections in Lansdale, and was elected to the Residents' Board at Ann's Choice. He was a huge fan of the Eagles and the Phillies. In addition, he and Sarah loved to spend weekends exploring flea markets and auctions, collecting Chester County furniture and antiques. His true passion was family, providing unending support for Sarah, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandson. He was preceded in death by Sarah, his wife of 57 years and his grandson Michael. He is survived by his children, John (Nancy), Michael (John) and Anne (Michael), grandchildren Matthew and Sarah, and great-grandson Cole. He is also survived by his brother Anthony (Ruth) and numerous nephews and cousins. There will be a private funeral service for family. In lieu of flowers and in memory of his late wife and his service to the community, donations may be sent to the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania.

Mr. Oliveira was my algebra teacher at Edgemont High School. He had the patience to deal with my frustration and the insight to see where my roadblocks lay. I left his class not only knowing what I needed to know but understanding it.

Mr. Oliveira was my geometry teacher at Edgemont High School during my sophomore year. I remember him as an excellent teacher and a good guy, with a positive attitude and refreshing sense of humor.

I graduated EHS in 1980. I had Mr. Oliveira as a math teacher for two years, I believe. I have fond memories of him as he was at my home weekly for a long period of time trying tutoring me in an effort to get "math" through my thick skull! Math "clicked" after my senior year and I went on to college, graduating with a BS in Information & Decision Sciences (computer programming & systems analysis.) I wish he had known that his help gave me a wonderful career in the field on computer forensics and online/computer investigations. May his memory be eternal.

He was such a nice man. I was a terrible math student and math class was not my favorite place, but I remember him fondly.
