Charles Edward Mashino

Mr. Charles Edward Maschino, 91, of Seymour, passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana in Columbus.

Charles was born in Jennings County on October 15, 1926, the son of Anna Mary (Gerth) and Carl William Maschino. Charles was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Seymour.

He retired as a brick mason after more than 50 years.

He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Catholic League, MaryKnoll, Heritage Foundation, The Brick Layers Association, and a former Vice President of the Brick Layers Local No. 25 in Indiana, of which he was a member for 69 years.

He served in the U.S. Army Transportation Corps from January 15, 1947 to May 18, 1948.

He donated wood for the Hayden Historical Museum.

Charles graduated from Hayden High School in 1944. After graduation, he received full scholarships to Indiana Central and Purdue University, but instead turned them down to serve in the U.S Army.

He served in the Army just after the end of World War II. He was stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, then Camp Lee, Virginia, then shipped overseas for service in Guam. He was also part of the Army's rebuilding force in Japan, after the war.

Charles was proud of his military service, and spoke often of his experiences overseas.

Our nation thanks Mr. Maschino for his service to his country.

After the war, Charles worked in Bloomington, Illinois, before returning to his home area and marrying Phyllis Irene (Beesley) Maschino. Although they were divorced several years ago, she survives.

Charles worked his career as a brick mason, building schools, jails, and even a bridge in Indianapolis.

He was well-respected by his peers -- after his retirement, Charles volunteered and helped build the Governor Edgar Whitcomb Community Center in Hayden, his hometown. He also built the blacksmith shop for the Hayden Museum.

Charles grew up on a farm, and in his later years had his own "hobby" farm, where he raised cows and mowed hay. He also was proud of having his farm designated as a U.S.-designated Forest Area, and took great care in tending to "his" trees, and wildlife in the area.

Charles is survived by his children, Charlotte Ann (Chris) Perry, Mary DiAnne (Malcolm) Smith, Tex Anna (Ed) Wayt, Charles Philip (Rebecca) Maschino, Edward Gilbert (Terry Marksberry) Maschino and Rebecca (Johnny Brasington) Ritz; grandchildren, Christopher (Madonna) Smith, Sarah (Josh Guibault) Smith, Jerry (Jordan) Smith, Travis (Jodi) Cooley, Benjamin (Mel) Wayt, Ashley Wayt, Matthew Maschino, Brian Maschino, Ed Maschino II, Joshua Maschino, Brandy (Juan) Mansuetti and Tristan Ritz; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Ann (Guy) Gustin, brother, Dale Joseph (Ellender) Maschino; and sister-in-law, Rose Maschino.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Fred David Maschino; and brothers, Louis Martin Maschino, Donald Ambrose Maschino and Gilbert Victor Maschino.

Funeral Mass will be at St. Ambrose Catholic Church on Monday, January 15 at 11 a.m., with Father Dan Staublin officiating, assisted by Deacon Mike East. Burial will follow at St. Ambrose Catholic Cemetery with full military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled Veterans 47, Korean and Vietnam Veterans, all of Seymour.

Family and friends may call at Voss & Sons Funeral Service on Sunday from 4-9 p.m. A Rosary service will be held at 3:30 p.m.
