CARRIER MILLS - Donald Ray Chenoweth, 81, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2025 at the Douglas T. Jacobson, State Veteran's Nursing Home, in Port Charlotte, Florida, due to declining health related to Alzheimer's disease and cancer.
He was born in Marion on Aug. 26, 1943, to Cleabron Ray and Leda Mae Chenoweth, and spent his formative years in Williamson County.
A proud United States Marine Corps veteran, he served with honor in the Vietnam War. He was a lifetime member of VFW post 1301 in Marion.
In 1970 he married Mary Patricia (Patty) Herr and spent several years in Chicago as owner-operator of the 1700 Club, a neighborhood bar. In 1973, he returned to Marion and enrolled at Southern Illinois University Carbondale as a 30 year old freshman, where he earned his private pilot's license. He then spent the next 30 years in Southern California real estate, finance and sales.
In 2005, Don and his wife returned to Southern Illinois and made their home in the Carrier Mills area until 2020, when they migrated to Florida.
In his 15 years in Saline County, Don grew close to his community, church, Faith Chapel, and especially to his neighbor Robert Bramlet, who passed in 2022. Robert instilled in him a love of God and a love of dominoes. Don leaves many dear friends who grieve his passing.
Don's passion for motorcycles was matched only by his love for his red 1990 Ford F350, guns and gardening. He loved and spoiled his dogs, Duke, Cookie and Brutus; and parrot, Xena.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patty Chenoweth, North Port, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and five siblings, Bonnie Cline, Evelyn Harding, Juanita Albaugh, Frank Chenoweth and Bob Chenoweth.
