Gary Poynor Obituary

BENTON - Gary Wendell Poynor, 71, went home to be with the Lord and the love of his life at 10:14 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, 2011. He was in Herrin Hospital and was surroun-ded by his family.

Mr. Poynor was born July 10, 1940, in Hamilton County, the son of Loren and Wilma (Nalley) Poynor.

He married the love of his life, the former Linda Kay Evans, on July 18, 1959, and she preceded him in death Oct. 11, 2007.

Gary was a concrete finisher and contractor and was the owner and operator of Poynor Concrete. He was a past business agent for the OP and CMIA. He was a member of Oddfellows Charity Lodge in Benton, where he served as Noble Grand and was a member of the Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery Board in Benton.

In later years, he enjoyed restoring antique automobiles and also worked for J.W. Reynolds Monument Company as a sales representative.

He was blessed with the ability to make people smile. His stories and one-liners accentuated his character. He was a member of New Life Church of God in Benton.

Surviving relatives include his two children, Steve Poynor and wife, Tammy, of Benton, Rebecca Wallace and husband, David, of West Frankfort; nine grandchildren, Larry Levault of Spokane, Wash., Jared Westerland, Tyler, Joshua and Alyssa Poynor, all of Benton, Bethany, Madison, Savannah Grace and Max Wallace, all of West Frankfort; one sister, Mary Lampley of Benton, a half brother, Jim Carroll of Benton; one great-granddaughter, Jayda Kay Kind of Benton; special niece, Rhonda Trusty of Benton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Poynor was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 48 years, Linda; stepfather, Joe Carroll; two brothers, Richard and Paul Poynor; and one sister, Melba Higgerson.

Visitation was Tuesday, Sept. 6, in Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home in Benton. Services will be at 11 a.m. today in New Life Church of God, with Pastors Cameron Trusty and Preston House officiating. Burial will be in Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton.

Memorial contributions may be made to New Life Church of God, 707 N. Du Quoin St., Benton, IL 62812.

Gary is so missed. He was one of my very best friends. Just doesn't seem right for him to not be here. Prayers continue for his children and Grandchildren. He loved them so very much!
