SPRINGFIELD - George Lindsay Criminger, 96, of Springfield, died at 12:44 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025, at Springfield Suites.
He was born on Sept. 12, 1928, in Mount Vernon to the late Rev. Dr. Frederick O. Criminger and Dorothy Barnes Criminger. His childhood was spent in Henderson, Kentucky, and Slater, Missouri. After graduating from high school in Kentucky, he attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale, receiving bachelor's and master's degrees in education.
He served as a first lieutenant in the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command during the Korean Conflict. After leaving military service, he returned to Carbondale to become a history instructor. He would spend the remainder of his career working for Southern Illinois University. He was most proud of his term as the Special Assistant to the University President, helping establish both the SIU School of Medicine and the SIU Law School.
He married Doris Jean Williams on Sept. 6, 1980. They were married for 30 years before she passed on Aug. 26, 2010.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Frederick O. Criminger, Jr.
Survivors include his three nephews, Fred W. (Tammy) Criminger, Chris (Sandy) Criminger and Keith (Valerie) Criminger; his three stepchildren with Doris, Monica Daniels, Marlene (Bill) Umbach and Mark Grigiski (Lisa Meyers) of Riverton.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8, in Staab Funeral Home - Springfield. A procession will take place from Staab to Camp Butler National Cemetery.
Graveside Service will be held at noon Monday, Sept. 8, in Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
