HERRIN - Joseph Theodore "Joe" Mossman II, 77, of Herrin, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024, at S.I.H. Herrin Hospital.
Joe was a former aircraft electrician at McDonnell Douglas; worked as a truck driver at three different truck lines for several years then ran a car wash in Herrin, Illinois. He worked as a "Paid on Call" firefighter for about 2 ½ years in Herrin. On June 18, 1984, he started working full time for the Herrin Fire Department and was there for 20 years and five months, retiring on Nov. 16, 2004 assistant chief.
Joe studied 8 ball at SIU, enjoyed working on and racing stock cars, and taking trips on his Boss Hoss Trike with his wife, Marge. He enjoyed retirement by spending six months with his wife, Marge, in the winter as snowbirds at International RV Park in Daytona Beach, FL. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2164 in Herrin. He loved spending time with his wife, family and friends.
Joe was born Sept. 25, 1946, in Benton to Joseph "Ted" and Pauline E. (Arnold) Mossman.
Joe married Marguerite "Marge" Lazorchak on Oct. 6, 1979, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. She survives him at their home in Herrin.
He is also survived by his nieces and their spouses, Thresa and Troy Vaughn of Tucson, Arizona, Tonya Richardson and Marty of Johnston City and Sharon Kay Thompson of Winchester, Tennessee, Kim Tribou of Georgia and Carla Dotson of Benton; nephews, Eddie and Beth Richardson of Pittsburg, Kevin Lazorchak of Missouri and Tommy Jo Lazorchak of Tennessee; sister-in-law, Linda Lazorchak of Johnston City; aunt, Frances Blockley of Herrin; several cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews; and former step-daughter, Sherry Jo Aldridge and her husband Dave of Eldorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents and several aunts and uncles.
The family would like anyone with a motorcycle to ride in the funeral procession as Joe was an avid motorcyclist.
A Rite of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin, with Mark D. Reyling officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin. Interment will be at San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
