Velma Dickerson Obituary

JONESBORO - Velma E. Dickerson, 62, of Jonesboro, formerly of Edwardsville, died at 4:55 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at her home.

Mrs. Dickerson was born in Alexander County on Jan. 14, 1947, the daughter of Marion and Alberta (Johnson) Stevens.

She married Mearl Dickerson on May 1, 1964, in Elco. He preceded her in death Aug. 1, 1997.

Mrs. Dickerson was a retired member of First Baptist Church in Edwardsville and a retired cook for Edwardsville School District 47. She was a resident of Edwardsville for 43 years before moving to Jonesboro.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-laws, Beth and Kevin Hileman of Jonesboro, and Lisa and Mark Jorden of South Roxanna; three grandchildren; special friends Cathy and Andy Smoraty of Warden; four brothers, Wesley Rhymer of Dongola, Aaron Stevens of Rock Falls, Charlie Johnson of Chicago and Marion Stevens of Olive Branch; five sisters, Mary Williams of Vienna, Irma Story of Metropolis, Barbara Foster of Goreville, Alberta Stevens of Park Ridge and Patricia Warner of Sherwood, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenny and Billy Stevens; half-brother Jim Ryhmer; and two sisters, Minnie Smith and Linda Price.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 15, 2009, at Jones Funeral Home in Tamms, with the Revs. Everett Owens and Barbara Owens officiating. Interment will be in Cummins Cemetery in McClure. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Velma was a fantastic and inspiring woman. She took care of me like a second mother (sometimes even tougher than my mom). Having her as a neighbor, as I grew up, was a blessing and I will hold those memories in my heart forever.
