Dennis Ohms Obituary

Dennis Ray Ohms

Cedar City

Dennis Ray Ohms was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 22, 1945 to Raymond Henry and Helen Arlene Barr Ohms. He married Carol Ann Peterson in the St. George Temple for time and all eternity on December 30, 1969. He was welcomed into the World of Spirits and back to our Heavenly Father on August 10, 2015. He experienced an unexpected heart attack and passed peacefully, surrounded by his family, in the mountains.

He is survived by his wife Carol, his sister Darlene Ohms Larsen, his brother Donald William Ohms, his children: Amy Ohms Archibald (Scott), Jenny Ohms Julander (David), Gabe Ray Ohms (Jessica), Seth Ray Ohms (Bridget), Sarah Ohms Poe (Aaron), 16 grandchildren with whom he loved to spend his time, and many nieces and nephews and their families.

He graduated from East High School in Salt Lake City and Dixie College in St. George. He enjoyed playing football for both schools. While attending Dixie College, he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and remained an active member throughout his life.

He served as a missionary in the Great Lakes Mission (1967-1969). He has served in numerous Church callings, the most recent being an Ordinance Worker in the St. George Temple. He was passionate about his family and Family History research.

He held the position of Bookstore Director at Southern Utah University for over 40 years. He was active in horseshoe pitching since his childhood, winning the Utah State Championship and participating in many NHPA World Tournaments. He established the Southern Utah Horseshoe Pitchers Association and was honored to serve as its president over the last 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father William Thomas Edwards and his infant brother Ronald Ohms.

He was a loving Husband, Papa, Grandpa, Uncle Denny, and Friend and will be missed by all who knew him. We look forward to being with him again.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, August 14, 2015 at the LDS Midvalley-Three Peaks Chapel (40 East Midvalley Road, Enoch, UT). A viewing will be on Thursday, August 13, 2015 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Southern Utah Mortuary (190 North 300 West, Cedar City, UT). On Friday, August 14, 2015, the viewing will be held at 9:30-10:30 am at the church. Interment will be in the Enoch City Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary. I will remember Dennis forever. He and I became acquainted the first year I taught at DSC, 1965. Dennis was one of my students, nominated me for teacher of the year, and remained a friend from this time on. How fitting it is to have a memorial for him. He earned it and I wish him well at the bookstore in Heaven.

Dennis was my 11 year old scout leader in Enoch and I enjoyed him very much and learned a lot from him. He was a great example to me and I was happy to see him at the SUU bookstore when I enrolled at SUU. I am sure you will miss him Carol! Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Carol,
My deepest sympathies to you and your family. Dennis was a wonderful friend to so many way back in our Dixie days. I think he was "Mr. Dixie." He set the spirit as I imagine he has done since. May your memories be a blessing to you.

Carol and family,
Our hearts are broken at Dennis's passing. You two have been such good friends to Betty and I. Since learning of his death we have been reminiscing about our fun times we had together when we were first married. I have remembered the hikes that Dennis and I went on through the Zion Narrows and the streams leading into Zion NP from the rim of Cedar Canyon. We also remember the evenings of playing cards and "Gal" giving birth to puppies and watching her balance a dog biscuit on her nose. Those were good times, we will miss him.

Today the world is a little less happy without Dennis in it. I am so happy that I had the privilege of knowing him and being his friend. For over 30 years we shared our love for pitching horseshoes. Both as associates, players and competitors. I learned a lot from Dennis not only in horseshoes but in life. What a great example Dennis has been to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. It's a happy day on the other side of the Vail where I'm sure the Savior was there to greet Dennis with open arms and said to him, "Well done my valiant son enter into my rest." I'm grateful to know I will embrace Dennis once again one day!!!
We Love you Carol, or prayers are with you...
