Karl Stucki Obituary

Karl F. Stucki

St. George

Karl F. Stucki, 83, passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2016. He was born May 9, 1932 in St. George to Ferdinand K. Stucki and Iona Bleak Stucki. He married Honey Crandall July 27, 1959.

After graduating from Dixie College, Karl served in the Korean War. Upon his return he moved to San Francisco and entered dental school. He opened an orthodontia practice in Oakland, California, where he lived most of his adult life. He returned to St. George for his final months.

Karl lived a life of adventure. In his 30s he was a private pilot, and enjoyed aerobatics. Later he was an abalone diver and a scuba diver. He was backpacker, rock climber, and bicyclist. His great outdoor passion, though, was sailing. He kept a sailboat on the San Francisco Bay for many years, and travelled many times to sail in the Caribbean.

Karl also lived a life of community service. He was a devoted Rotarian for more than 50 years. He made over 100 international service trips, including many trips to Central America. For his tireless efforts and innovative solutions to international concerns, he was awarded Rotary International's highest honor, the Service Above Self Award. In the course of this service he made hundreds of devoted friends around the world, and improved living conditions for thousands of people.

Karl is survived by Honey Stucki of St. George; daughters Jan (Scott) Wilson of Salt Lake City, and Susan (Bill) Gmeiner of Yadkinville, North Carolina; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He is preceded in death by his sister Caroline Addy and brother Alfred Stucki.

The family thanks Journey of Hope Hospice for loving support in Karl's final days.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 16, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff Street. A second memorial service will be held in Oakland on Saturday, January 30.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Rotary International Foundation.

Arrangements are made under the direction of Spilsbury Mortuary, (435) 673-2454. Family and friends may sign Karl's guestbook at www.spilsburymortuary.com.
