Luna Mitchell Obituary

Luna Diane Smith Mitchell

Cedar City

Luna Diane Smith Mitchell, 81, returned to her Heavenly Father and into the loving arms of those who have passed before her in the early hours of Saturday, November 30, 2013, with her husband of 60 years and a daughter at her side at her home in Cedar City, Utah.

Diane was born April 20, 1932, in Cedar City, Utah, the second of three children born to Bertrand Carpenter and Idona Lamb Jackson Smith.

She graduated from Cedar City High School in 1950 and also attended the Branch Agricultural College, (now SUU), in Cedar City.

She married Collins Benson Mitchell on October 30, 1953, and from that union was born 5 children. The marriage was later solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple.

Diane spent her young life in Cedar City with much of that time on her Father's ranch in the North Fork area. She often spoke and told stories of her time on the mountain and the influence of being around her parents and family members and the lifelong lessons that were learned during this time.

Her young married life included working for Mountain Bell and Valley View Medical Center. While their children were still young, Collins was transferred to Weber County so the family lived for a few years in the Ogden and Roy areas. They transferred back to Cedar City and for several years she was employed again with Valley View Medical Center and Mountain Bell as well as being the owner and proprietor of the Plaza Pet Shop. Later, the family moved to St. George, Utah, where she continued to work during the divestiture of Mountain Bell and US West, which took her between St. George and Salt Lake. After retiring from US West, she began working for Dixie Regional Medical Center on the OB floor. She absolutely loved this period of her life and so often spoke very highly of those whom she worked with and cherished the friendships she made, not only from those at the hospital but so many others that touched her life.

After retirement from the Hospital, she and Collins moved back to Cedar City.

Diane was always happy to have family and friends in her life and in her home. Her husband, children and grandchildren were the light of her life. She always left an impression on those she met and did all she could to make those around her happy.

She is survived by her husband Collins Mitchell of Cedar City; daughters Gina Boyce of St. George; Lynn Mitchell of Cedar City; Idonna Bulloch of Cedar City; Gaye Friel, (Larry), of Las Vegas; and son Bert Mitchell, (Marta), of Cedar City. Brother Gary Smith, (Barbara), of Hurricane and sister, Sylvia Bulloch, (Don), of Cedar City as well as 13 Grandchildren and 10 Great-Grandchildren with another on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A visitation will take place on Wednesday, December 4, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 So. Bluff St. in St. George, Ut. Another visitation will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2013, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the Iron Springs LDS Chapel, 1650 West Center St. in Cedar City, Ut.
